Kathy Britsch Flannery, age 74, went to her eternal home with Jesus on May 20, 2024. She was born August 30, 1949, in San Antonio, Texas, and raised in Hondo, Texas. She is preceded in death by her parents John Henry and Fannie Jean Britsch as well as her husband Martin Ross Flannery. Kathy is survived by her brothers John Britsch, Robert Britsch, Charles Britsch, and her sister Mary Healy. She is also survived by her daughter Tamara Bolch, and husband Josh Bolch as well as her stepdaughters Veronica Flannery and Teresa Morin.
As Kathy would have freely told anyone, she was extremely blessed to have 9 beautiful grandchildren. In 1968, Kathy graduated from Hondo High School, then went on to business school, as well as attending classes at Southwest Texas State School. She went on to work for the Valero Cooperation, where she met and made two lifelong friends who had been colleagues there. Thanks to her sister Mary, who set them up, she fell in love with and later married Martin Ross Flannery on August 6, 1983. Their daughter Tamara was born less than a year later. Kathy had the privilege of spending many years primarily as homemaker while raising her daughter Tamara, but also delighted in working for several years as an assistant preschool teacher at St. Andrew’s Day School. In her free time, Kathy enjoyed a variety of activities such as Bible study, nightly walking with neighbors, planting flowers in her yard, baking cherished passed down recipes, attending her daughter’s and grandchildren’s many extracurricular activities, volunteering and serving in the church, and winning Scrabble games with her treasured friends during their weekends spent together.
Many of those who knew Kathy were aware that her life was filled with obstacles regarding her health. She was diagnosed at age 12 with Type 1 Diabetes, then as a young adult was faced with renal failure, underwent dialysis, retinal detachment, and the loss of her eye, as well as two kidney transplants from her loving, selfless brothers. Because of the faithfulness of God, and her close-knit family who was continuously by her side, she was able to live fully these last 45 years of her life after her second kidney transplant. Even though these trials were a large part of her life, she didn’t let them stop her from living a joyous life full of thankfulness unto the Lord. She truly exemplified to those around her how someone perseveres though trials and draws their strength from the Lord daily. Kathy always shared with friends (and even people she met in the grocery store!) what God had done in her life, as a testimony to His goodness.
We will all miss very dearly this precious sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, but are so thankful that she is now completely whole and in the forever presence of her Savior.
