'In an orchestra, the leader of the performers earns the right of "first chair" -- the seat up front in full view of the audience and the conductor. Earning such an honor takes hard work, commitment, and courage. In graduate school, we are lucky enough to choose our own seats in the classroom. Kendall chose the "first chair" in every classroom -- first row, first seat from the aisle. After some time, I came to realize that Kendall had earned that spot in our classrooms as she had become one of the leaders of our community. Her commitment to her family, friends, and her academics truly were represented in her choice to sit in the "first chair". The one time I sat there, I felt out of place, because I did not feel I had earned the right to sit there; this was Kendall's seat after all. Now, the "first chair" in our graduate school 'orchestra' will no longer have its proper owner. The seat will be an everlasting reminder of someone who gave inspired creativity and joy to our graduate school community. I am grateful to have had Kendall with me as a classmate for one year; and her presence, though physically missing, will continue to inspire people far beyond the walls of Mervis Hall.'
