Ken was born in Hazlerigg, a village north of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, on February 22, 1940. He was a proud Geordie, a native of Newcastle and its surrounds, and embodied its characteristic "grit and wit."
Ken's love of engineering brought him first to London, England, where he met his beloved wife, Fay, completed apprenticeships, and earned degrees in physics, mathematics, and engineering. In the 1980s, an opportunity in the United States spurred Ken and Fay to apply for residency, and move with their two children to San Antonio, Texas.
In San Antonio, Ken built a long and respected career at Goetting & Associates, where his precision, creativity, and leadership shaped countless large-scale projects. He was not only a skilled engineer but also a mentor to younger engineers, generously sharing his extensive knowledge.
Ken's retirement in 2013 marked the end of an era at Goetting & Associates. His colleagues admired and valued him as a meticulous and tireless engineer, gifted storyteller, and friend. His absence is deeply felt.
Ken was also an avid square dancer who danced alongside the Fun Dancers, a group of dancers based in Schertz. He attended square dancing events with his wife, and many friends across the state and beyond.
Ken's love for his family was unwavering. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Fay Wheatley; his daughters, Bryony and Thalia Wheatley; his son-in-law, Ted Slingerland; and his grandchildren, Isaac and Kate Wheatley. The grandchildren will especially miss playing in the pool with him, his sense of humor, and their mutual love of British treats. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
Memorial on November 10, 2025, 12pm at Alamo Heights Methodist Church, Garden Chapel with a reception following at 1:30 pm at Alamo Heights Franklin Park Independent Living in San Antonio.
