Surrounded by her husband, brother, and children, Kristi Maren LaMontagne ascended into the arms of Our Loving Savior Jesus Christ on December 11, 2017 after courageously battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer that had recently been diagnosed on October 18, 2017. The eldest of four children to US Marine Officer, Edward Lewis Fossum and Mary Jane Quien, Kristi was born March 5, 1948 in Quantico, Virginia. During her youth, she lived in the states of California, Oklahoma, and in Virginia, where she graduated from Virginia Beach High School before heading south to Texas to attend Texas Lutheran College in Seguin to begin her studies in music. With her decision to change majors a year later, Kristi transferred to Trinity University in San Antonio to study elementary education where she met her husband on a blind date, and upon graduating, married Robert Weir LaMontagne on December 19, 1970. Following her graduation from Trinity, Kristi taught elementary school children in SAISD for two years to help support her husband while he attended Trinity graduate school. Upon his graduation, she moved with her husband to Monterrey, Mexico where he joined his father’s business. In the ten years that followed, Kristi initially taught first grade at the American School Foundation of Monterrey a few years before leaving to give birth to three wonderful children. In 1982, Kristi returned to San Antonio with her husband and young family, so that her children could all attend San Antonio Christian School (SACS) and later TCU and Baylor Universities.
While living in Monterrey with her husband, Kristi was immersed in various prayer groups under the leadership of the Union Church of Monterrey, was an active member of the American Society of Monterrey that oversaw community social gathering activities for all the American families living in Monterrey, and taught private piano lessons upon request by interested students. Her favorite hobbies were playing the piano, reading Christian and self-taught improvement books, helping friends organize significant social events, traveling with her husband to Europe and South America; and spending time with her family in their condo in Rockport before it was sold many years afterwards.
Kristi was preceded in death by her parents, Col Edward L. Fossum and Mary Jane Fossum, her brother, Erik Daniel, her sister, Janis Leah, and her granddaughter, Marlowe Katherine LaMontagne. She is survived by her husband, Robert Weir LaMontagne and her three married children and nine grandchildren: Elise Maren and husband, Christian Ellis of Fort Worth, Texas, Alexandra Weir and her husband, Clark Allen of San Antonio, Texas, Maurice Robert and his wife, Daphne Langdon of San Antonio, Braden Ellis, Elliot Ingram, Huston Allen, Savannah LaMontagne, Landon Ellis, Emery Allen, Macpherson LaMontagne, Atlee Allen, Mabyn LaMontagne, and her brother Jeffrey Edward Fossum and his wife Michelle Susann Gill of Dallas and their children, William and Evan.
Kristi will be sorely missed by her family and all those she touched in a special way. We would like to express our sincere and deep appreciation to her beautiful Hospice Caregivers: Janine, Rena, Eva, and Angela. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at 11:00AM at the Margarite B. Parker Chapel at Trinity University, 1 Trinity Place, San Antonio, Texas 78212. Interment will be at the Sunset Memorial Park on 1701 Austin Highway with a reception to be held at a private home located on 2039 Milan, San Antonio immediately afterwards.
In lieu of flowers, please send your donations to the Burzynski Clinic located in Houston, Texas or to the International Christian Community Church in Cuenca, Ecuador where she became a member before leaving Ecuador.
