Larry graduated from Sam Houston High School in 1959. At a Fiesta event at Hermann Sons in 1960, he met the love of his life, Kathleen Sauer. They were married on September 3, 1966. Larry graduated from both the University of Houston and the College of Optometry, Houston and received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, Houston in 1978. He completed his residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and was Board Qualified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1981. Larry started his private practice in San Antonio that same year. Larry was a pioneer in Lasik eye surgery that is common today. He traveled to Switzerland, England, Canada and Mexico to get certified for the procedure before FDA approval. He was the first ophthalmologist to perform the Lasik procedure in Texas. Larry received international recognition for his work and enjoyed long term, successful relationships with the medical community in San Antonio.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Charles, Don, Phillip, James and Joey; and sisters, Betty and Jo Nan. Surviving are his wife, Kathleen; children Cary Lothringer (Amy) and Leslie Hodges (Dale); sister, Mary Ann Winden; and grandchildren, Devin Hodges, Cameron Hodges, Grant Lothringer and Ella Lothringer.
Larry was a devoted husband and was married to his wife Kathleen for 57 years. He was a proud member of the Order of the Sons of Hermann and the South Texas Wine Guild where he was president for several years. He loved spending time with family especially his four grandchildren. He loved all animals but had a special bond with his horses and the white-tailed deer on his property. He also spent countless hours on the weekend gardening and growing grapes. He was a phenomenal artist and probably had the best penmanship you have ever seen. Larry struggled with Alzheimer’s in his latter years but always loved to share a joke and a laugh. He will be sorely missed by all who know him but never forgotten.
