To Leonel’s family—  I wanted to speak for a particular group of Leonel’s ISA friends in saying that although we know life must go on after the tremendous loss of such an integral part of our early high school memories, we have not forgotten you. How difficult this holiday season must be without him, and you must be wondering why. No one can provide a sure answer for the tragedies of life, but I can tell you that Leonel’s influence extended far beyond his years. In our teen & young adult years we can be selfish, and sometimes we judge others on their appearance before we know them: he taught us the right way, to put others before ourselves and to treat everyone as a potential friend rather than a stranger. We are better people for knowing him, and thankful also to you, his family for raising him with these wonderful qualities. I am so sorry for what you have endured, but I want you to know our thoughts are with you.  Zachary

Leonel was always extremely cool in conversations with me. Me and him never shared a close friendship but I can say that when it came down to it, Leonel was a great guy because he always had an openness for people and brought people into conversation in a friendly manner.

Leonel was one of those people that everyone loved to be around, and of whom only good words could be spoken. I only knew him a short time at ISA, but our conversations about music and his sense of humor were ones I will remember for the rest of my life. He had a kind word and joke for anyone around, whether they were a close friend or not. Although he is now gone, his kindness extended his influence beyond his years. I, like many find his presence irreplaceable, but I hope that friends and family alike can celebrate his memory by living a life of joy: as he always did.  Zachary Durham  ISA Class of 2018

Leonel really was larger than life. Even though I only was in school with him for two years I remember his outsized presence. He had a great sense of humor and I think back to when he would join us for hackysack during lunch. I also remember his heart, and he was one of those rare kind-natured people who had nothing bad to say about anybody. Even if you didn’t know him well he would talk, laugh, and be there for you. He really saw the best in all of us.

I offer sincere condolences to  parents Sergio and Maria & family.  I pray he RIP in the arms of His heavenly Father. I didn't know him, but heard of him from Sergio.  I know this is a very sad time.   Cherish his memories . Much love,  Irene M. Garcia & family

I was devastated to hear the news about Leonel. He was a good friend to my son, and a valuable member of my class (Digital Media) at ISA in 9th grade.  Last week, I was searching for something in my Google Drive, and this photo randomly appeared:  none of the search terms matched, yet this was the first result that popped up--it was like he was trying to communicate with me. The photo was taken at Make a Difference Fair freshman year. One of the groups was doing face-painting to raise money for their cause, and Leonel asked for this Mike Tyson tribute. He had a great sense of humor.  I am so, so sorry he is gone.
