Les grew up on a farm and graduated from Corwith High School where he played basketball. His team’s “starting five” were lifelong friends. After graduation, Les served in the Marines for two years stationed in Guam after WWII. He met his wife, Cindy, while attending Sioux Falls College where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics. He continued his studies to earn another Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering at School of Mines, Rapid City, South Dakota, later earning his PE. While engineering bridges in Minnesota and then working for the City Water Department in Sioux Falls, he loved to referee football and basketball on the side. The Lord moved him and his family from Sioux Falls to San Antonio, Texas in 1982 where he served as General Manager of the Water Board for San Antonio and became an avid Spurs fan.
Les was, and is, a true friend and servant of the Lord as he was always ready to love and serve people. From his fifty plus years of service in Rotary, serving at Bible Study Fellowship Headquarters, opening his home to house many in need, serving his friends, family, or anyone else, Les’ desire was to honor and bless others from his generous heart. He lived up to his Marine motto of “Semper Fi”, “Always Faithful”, as he served his Lord, Jesus Christ. His love for family and friends was deep and loyal. Les was known for making many laugh. He loved creating with wood and spent hours doing woodwork in his shop especially creating crosses, which he loved to give away. With his bass voice, he loved singing in quartets, church choirs, or with friends for his beloved Genesis Sunday School Class at Wayside Chapel. Les is fondly remembered for his many “Happy Birthday” songs, which always ended with his deep “…and many moooore!” Affectionately known as Les, Dad, Grandpa, and Uncle Les, he will be sorely missed until we are reunited with him in the presence of Jesus. Praise God for the hope we have in Christ.
Les was preceded in death by his father, Lester J. Hash; mother, Flora Bosworth Hash; brother, Ralph Hash; sisters, Thelma Forbes, Florence Eden, and Wanda Baughman.
