Linda was born in Columbia, SC, while her father was stationed at Fort Jackson, but the small family soon moved to Peoria, Illinois. Linda grew into a lovely and sweet Midwestern girl, full of God’s grace and very close to her family and friends. After graduating from Morton High School, she headed south to escape the cold winters and seek her fortune.
After several cross-country adventures, Linda met someone almost her equal, a First Command financial planner named Fred, and they were married at St. John Lutheran Church in Boerne, TX, on November 30th, 1996. Their marriage was the bedrock of their lives and enjoyed each other’s company for almost 27 years.
When Linda discovered her husband-to-be, she was a senior manager at American Airlines call center in San Antonio before the events of 9/11/2001 forced its complete closure. Without having any banking experience, Linda was hired by World Savings mortgage banking company and she advanced through the ranks and two bank takeovers to become a Wells Fargo executive vice president. By 2019, she was ready to call it quits and lead a life of retired bliss. Fred grew increasingly envious, so he retired a few years later, and they made plans to begin travelling abroad.
Without much warning, those plans were dashed in 2021 with the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. During that time, enduring chemotherapy and clinical trials, she fought bravely against the disease. Despite the pain, she never complained and always thanked the Lord for her blessings in life. Without question, Linda had all of the right qualities of a beautiful lady who truly inspired those around her. She had an uncanny ability to bring the best out of everyone and make anyone who met her feel special. Her love for others was summed up well in 1 Corinthians 13. We will miss her dearly.
Linda is survived by her husband, G. Frederic Joy, and her step-son Brandon F. Joy and his wife, Melissa; her mother, Betty L. Thacker; her younger brother, Douglas W. Roberts and wife Janet; her nephew Brent D. Roberts and wife Tori and their fine sons Carson and Cameron; her niece, Stacey L. Leighty and her husband, Matt. Also surviving are three rather cute grandchildren—Claire, Caroline, and Chandler.
