Lorey Anthony Marino, known to most as Larry, lived a life full of adventure, laughter, love, and the kind of practical wisdom that can only be gained through a well-lived life. Born in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, on July 9, 1929, Larry's journey through life's grand adventure ended on July 4, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas just days before his 95th birthday.
Larry's story is one of a man who embraced the world with open arms and a ready smile. As the second oldest of five children, he learned early on the art of storytelling and the joy of making people laugh. He carried these gifts throughout his life, brightening the days of those around him.
In 1949, Larry swapped the rolling hills of Pennsylvania for the rugged terrain of Alaska when he joined the Army. He was stationed in Fairbanks during the Korean conflict and was honorably discharged in 1952.
It was in his family’s bustling Italian restaurant in Long Beach, California, where he met Carol, the love of his life, and constant companion for 63 years. They went on to welcome three children—Toni, Matt, and Phillip—and six grandchildren.
Larry's career took him to the General Telephone Company, where he connected with people in more ways than one. After retiring in 1986, he couldn't sit still, so he launched his own upholstery business, putting his handy touch to good use. Later, he and Carol took on the adventure of running a campground in Ohio, creating a haven for travelers and stories alike before finally retiring to San Antonio, TX.
A man who loved history as much as he enjoyed creating it, Larry had a knack for building things with his hands—whether it was a piece of furniture, a family home, or an unbreakable bond with friends. Traveling with Carol was one of his favorite pastimes, and together they traversed the globe, collecting tales and memories.
Larry never met a stranger, only friends he hadn't yet charmed with his humor. Larry's legacy is one of joy and genuine connection. His life was a masterclass in the art of friendship, and his absence will be felt by all who had the pleasure of enjoying his wit.
