Lory Mayer a Holocaust Survivor, never considering herself a victim, has passed thru our arms here on earth in San Antonio, Texas on the evening of Wednesday, April 17, 2013. She was a beloved Mother, Grand-Mother and Great Grand-Mother. Lory was born in Bucharest, Romania on April 23, 1928. She was raised by her mother Anna who she adored. In her early teens she was sent to a Holocaust Labor Camp and was never able to reunite with her mother.
She escaped captivity after being released for sport by her captors. She was forever saddened by her survival, yet grateful at the same time. She traveled for many Days until she reached the Italian border, losing one son along the way. She gave birth to
Two sons while living in Italy with her husband Mike Elias. She had dreams for a better life for her children, Jacob and Eurvin and arrived on Ellis Island, New York in 1951.
She arrived in the United States speaking 5 languages and learned English and Spanish
within a year. Upon gracious sponsorship and friendships she formed over her lifetime, she was given a life in San Antonio, Texas. This was her home and her country for which she was forever grateful. Her thoughts about her early life were shared with her children on brief occasions and served as a true inspiration to us.
She worked for many years as a factory seamstress learning to earn her first paychecks and support her family. She moved on to become a personable sales woman for Sophie's on Houston Street in Downtown San Antonio. She then accepted a position at USAA and finished her working career as a supervisor for AmeriChem. Throughout her life she was blessed by loving people and the freedoms that were offered to her in America and in return she was loved by all who knew her in work and at rest.
Our Mother's greatest accomplishments as she often reminded us were her children, grand-children, and great grand-children. She began her life amidst a world of pain and suffering but once removed from that environment she instilled love, compassion and forgiveness. "In all living things, there exists some goodness..never forget this". She gave all of herself, not for reward but because she told us "they must need it more than we do". She honored the Sabbath and she was never a victim.
She found pleasure in the day, the time and the people who were around her.
She was truly a person of amazing strength and character that has touched all who
knew her in this life.
She is survived by her son Eurvin Mayer, her son Jacob Mayer, her daughter Debbie Mayer and her daughter Sarah Rubin. She is survived by 9 Grand Children (Hope, Ivey, Jesse, Joy, Julie, Krissy, Laura, Madison and Michael).
She is also survived by 14 Great-Grand Children and many friends she has made throughout a lifetime.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 25, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for all family and friends who wish to share in the celebration of her life at Porter Loring on McCullough.
A private graveside service will be held the following day.
The family requests the presence of any adults at this service as they say their lasts remarks about their beloved mother and grand-mother.
