Born on November 8, 1929 in He’eia Ko’olaupoko, O’ahu. He is the son of the late Joseph McCabe and Eliza Rowan McCabe. He was married to the late Julia Ada East of Port Arthur, Texas and had four children, Craig Kaleiali’i McCabe, Sharon Wahinenaniipihamekalokomaikaiikeaonei McCabe-Flores and husband Michael, Lisa Kamealoha Gonzalez and husband Jesse, and Jesse Lee Newton Jr. (deceased) and wife Judy. He has numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, many loving nieces, nephews, family and friends. He was the youngest of 3 brothers and 2 sisters, whom all preceded him in death. They are Stephen Kaleiali’i, Miriam Ha’aeoholani, Raymond Kanoeau, Joseph Jr. and Violet Ho’ohihi.
He comes from a very large family from the He’eia Kane’ohe area. His great great-grandfather, Komomua, from North Kohala, Hawai’i, with wife Kua a Kokumoku ‘O’ He’eia, which were both full blooded Hawaiians, they settled in He’eia at a place called Ke’alohi.
He attended St. Louis High School, and in late 1950 went on active duty with the U.S. Army. He and 37 other boys from Hawai’i left by boat from Pearl Harbor to Ft. Mason, California. They went to Camp Stillman California to await training at Ft. Ord California. His 1st tour of duty was in occupied Germany. Upon his return to the U.S. he was assigned to HQ U.S. Army Pacific, Ft. Shafter, Hawai’i. He did 2 tours of duty in Vietnam, with the 1st infantry Div. and the 25th Infantry Div. During his 2nd tour with the 25th he was assigned to a mechanized battalion, where he was appointed acting Battalion Command Sgt Major. Upon his return he was assigned to HQ U.S. Army Pacific and appointed acting S3 Sgt Major. His awards include his most prestigious, the Combat Infantry Mans Badge, The Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 3 OLC’s, Army Occupation Medal (Germany), National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal with 3 Loops, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Sharp Shooter Medal, and Marksmen’s Medal.
Retiring in June 1976, after 28 years of active military service, he and his family moved to San Antonio, Texas to make their home. In that city he found out about a Hawai’i Club organized by local military from Randolph AFB and joined that organization. He was a 5-time president of the club, with annual Luau’s, May Day, camping trips and monthly activities for the children. His love for the Hawaiian Culture and Hawaiian Music brought a new phase in his life, when he and wife Julia founded and directed a Hawaiian/Polynesian Dance Troupe. The troupe entertained thought Texas for over 25 years; to include the Texas Folklife Festival (for 21 years), Hawai’i Club Luaus, May Day Celebrations, San Antonio Convention Center events and numerous private parties. The highlight being a weekly Luau at the Tropicana Hotel on the Riverwalk for 2 years. He lived a full life with love, laughter and happiness.
