

Louis Joseph Toupal, Jr. of San Antonio, Texas died on Aug. 12, 2014 at 4:20PM at SSAMC Hospital. He was 84. He was born on June 14, 1930 in Olivia, MN to Louis J Toupal Sr. and Anna Wallenta. He attended Willmar High School in 1948, American University, Georgetown University, San Antonio College and numerous military schools specializing in ordinance maintenance and disposal.
Louis met Sylvia Adele Lamas in Colorado Springs in 1954 and married in 1955 in Corpus Christi, TX. Louis had four children: Richard Louis, Ronald Glenn, Katherine Elisabeth, and Thomas Edward Toupal. Louis began his US military career in the Army in 1949 and received a direct commission to 1st Lt in 1961. His assignments include Fort Riley, KA; Okinawa, Korea; Camp Attaberry, IN; Ft Carson, CO; Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD; Presidio of San Francisco, CA; Indian Head, MD; Benicia Arsenal, CA; France; Germany; Fort Belvoir, VA; United States Naval Propellant Plant, MD; Ft. Benning, GA; Red Stone Arsenal, AL; Vietnam; and Fort Sam Houston, TX. He retired as a Major from Fort Sam Houston, TX in 1971. Louis began his Federal Service career in 1972 by helping activate the 650-bed Audie Murphy Memorial Hospital. He served in various positions in the Supply Division including Chief of Property Management. In 1980, Louis joined the Defense Mapping Agency Hydrographic/Topographic Center of San Antonio and retired in 1992, after 20 years of service.
Louis was preceded in death by his mother Anna Wallenta Toupal, father Louis Toupal Sr, brother Donald Toupal and his two sons Dr. Richard Louis Toupal and Thomas Edward Toupal. Louis is survived by his wife, Sylvia, sister Elaine Clouse, younger brother Jim Toupal, son Ronald Toupal, daughter-in-law Suzanne Toupal, daughter Katherine Alexander, son-in-law Kevin Alexander, and daughter-in-law Gigi Toupal. Louis will be sorely missed by his nine grandkids: Brittany Alexander Sewell, James Toupal, Danielle Alexander Fomin, Ronald Toupal Jr., Cameron Alexander, Laurel Toupal, Kayleigh Toupal, Justin Fellows, Jason Fellows, and great granddaughter Ava Katherine Sewell. Louis was a kind sole who made friends easily. Most of all, he was a great husband, father, and grandfather who loved life and his family. He will truly be missed by all of his friends and family.
The visitation will be held on Monday, August 18, 2014 beginning at 6:00 P.M. followed by the Rosary Service at 7:00 P.M. at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Hwy. The Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at 9:30 A.M. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 4411 Moana Dr. The interment with military honors will follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
