Lucy was born to Philip and Carrie May Coffey on May 14, 1906 on a farm near Martinsville, Indiana. She had five brothers and sisters: Ethyl, Elizabeth, Mose, Kathryn, and Harry. Soon after graduation from high school she moved to Texas.
She was working in the Dallas area when at age nearly 37 she enlisted in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps during World War II. As a WAC she served in the Pacific, and saw duty in Australia, the Philippine Islands (Luzon Campaign) and Dutch New Guinea (now Papua New Guinea). She was awarded two Bronze Stars among other awards. She left the WAC at the conclusion of the war but continued to work for the military as a civilian, first in Tokyo and then in Okinawa for the next 10 years.
Lucy returned to the United States in the mid 1950's and moved to San Antonio, where she worked at Kelly Air Force Base until her retirement. Soon after moving to San Antonio she became a member of Madison Square Presbyterian Church, and the church was an important part of her life in San Antonio. She was a long time treasurer of the Presbyterian Women's Organization, active in the Martha Circle, and was elected an elder of her church. She was active in NARFE, where she had many friends. Lucy was also an avid fan of the San Antonio Spurs.
In July, 2014 the veteran's Honor Flight organization made it possible for Lucy to visit Washington, D.C. Lucy was able to visit the Women's Memorial, the World War II Memorial, and the White House, and the trip was a tremendously uplifting experience for her.
Lucy was pre-deceased by her brothers and sisters. She is survived by several nephews and nieces, great -nephews and -nieces and their children, and a host of friends.
Her family would like to thank the many friends and caregivers who helped Lucy face the challenges of advancing age.
A celebration of the life of Lucy Coffey will be held on Wednesday, March 25, at 2 PM at Madison Square Presbyterian Church, 319 Camden Street, San Antonio.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Women's Memorial Foundation (www.womensmemorial.org) or the San Antonio Humane Society.
