Luis E. Prieto

Upon graduating from Javeriana University School of Medicine in Colombia, SA, he did his Residency in Internal Medicine at the Central Military Hospital in Bogota, before traveling to the USA in 1969 to do postgraduate work.

After serving his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA and at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Bryn Mawr, PA, he did a fellowship in Gastroenterology at Presbyterian University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA. He began his private practice in Wichita, Kansas in 1975 and worked as an Internist and Gastroenterologist for over 30 years in Kansas, Colombia and Texas.

In June of 2003 he was diagnosed with brain cancer. The 20 months he survived after his diagnosis were a testament to the way in which Lucho lived his life. Throughout the entire process, he never wavered in his profound faith and took on each challenge with strength, determination, and humor.

The kind, caring, and genuine way in which he always interacted with others, personally and professionally, was reciprocated ten-fold in prayers and positive energy from a network of friends and family, and even strangers, across many countries, who recognized the extraordinary person that he was. With the loving support of his immediate and extended family, Lucho maintained an excellent quality of life, enjoying each day to the fullest.

He was a just and gentle man, inspiring and bringing joy to everyone around him. Lucho is survived by his wife, Clemencia Lizarralde Prieto; daughters, Diana Carolina, Claudia Lucia and Sylvia Elena; father, Alfonso Prieto Leon; brothers, Father Alfonso M. Prieto, Ernesto Prieto, Fernando Prieto; and by his extended family. Each moment, smile, and interaction with Lucho was precious and filled with love and appreciation.
