Maria Guadalupe Corona Gonzalez, born on January 7, 1924, went to be with our Lord on September 14, 2014. Lupe, as everyone called her, was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe M. Gonzalez and her 7 brothers. She is survived by her children, Carlos Gonzalez and wife AnnaMaria, Joe Gonzalez and wife Beth, Rachel Garza, Daniel Gonzalez and wife Blanca, 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Lupe was born in San Antonio, TX and went to Lanier High School. As a young girl, Lupe had an opportunity to perform with the Dance Folklorico and performed in and around San Antonio. It was at Lanier that she met her husband Joe. After WWII, Joe came home from the war and made her his bride. They were married for 56 years and made San Antonio their home. She and Joe loved Mariachi music and enjoyed performing together. They spent most of their evenings serenading each other singing songs of the Golden Era of music. Blessed with four beautiful children, Lupe and Joe packed up the family and loved spending every summer at the coast camping and fishing. It was her love of family and life that blessed everyone she met. Lupe had a huge heart for the Lord and for everyone around her. She lived her life wanting to serve others and to be a shining light to everyone she met, whether it was by sharing her life stories or preparing a meal. She regularly volunteered at several nursing homes baking cookies and reading scripture to residents. We are confident she is up in heaven preparing her famous enchiladas and rice and making everyone feel right at home. Lupe’s optimistic outlook on life can be attributed to her constant devotion to God. There was never a moment when she didn’t speak of God’s goodness and grace, and she never missed an opportunity to share her love of God and her testimony with others. She was a loving, compassionate and forward thinking person and a blessing to everyone with whom she came in contact. It was through her relationship with God that she felt most at peace. Through that relationship she was able to influence and inspire those around her. She lived her life “walking the walk and talking the talk.”
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Sept 22nd, 2014 at 12 noon with a visitation held prior to the service beginning at 11:00am at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Hwy, San Antonio, Texas. A funeral procession will depart the funeral home for interment at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband to be together for eternity.
The family wishes to thank the compassionate and caring staff at Huebner Creek Health and Rehabilitation, Mary Teasley and Optum Palliative & Hospice for their excellent attention.
