Mannin Lee “Buster” Smoot, Jr. was a gentle, kind man who always had a smile for everyone. He was a loving and loyal husband and an excellent father in every way.
He was born in San Antonio, Texas, July 16, 1935 but spent most of his youth in Brown County where his parents farmed a small plot of land. He woke early every day to milk cows and do the usual farm chores required. Sometimes in the afternoon you could hear him singing as he plowed the fields.
He moved back to San Antonio after graduating high school and worked in the family trade, house painting. He eventually joined the military and spent two years in Germany. Upon returning to San Antonio, he met his wife, Connie, as both families lived on the same street and they fell in love and married in 1959. A son, Steven Lee Smoot, joined them October 15, 1960 and this would be their small family for the next 60+ years.
Buster was a game player, whether it be dominoes, cards or board games. He was fiercely competitive. Bowling was his sport of choice, participating in several leagues over the years and travelling to regional, state and national competitions often. He was awarded a high score ring when he bowled a 299 one night in league. Buster was also an avid NASCAR fan and followed the tour every season.
Buster and Connie lived in the Countryside Subdivision for over 40 years and he earned the respect of many neighbors with his knowledge of plants and trees, making the property the envy of the neighborhood. While outside, if a neighbor walked by, there was always a comment about how nice the yard looked and how clean and neat the garage was. He was meticulous in all things and back in the CB days, his handle was “Mr. Clean”.
He will be missed so much by so many people who loved him. Rest in peace dear soul.
