Margaret Martinez, born on February 22, 1935, to Rosalio and Sarah Mendez, peacefully passed into the Kingdom of God on April 28, 2026, joining her beloved husband, Tony “Skipper” Martinez, and countless friends and family. Throughout her life, and in her final days, she was embraced in care and love by her children and many other family and friends. Special thanks for support is extended to all of Margaret’s nieces and nephews, her sister Maryhelen, and sister-in-law Elaine.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Rachel Acosta, her grandparents Alfredo and Guadalupe Castillo, and her infant daughter. A proud graduate of Fox Tech High School in San Antonio, she met the love of her life, Tony. They married on November 20, 1954, and together built a life filled with love, laughter and cherished memories.
Margaret, a trusted and valued employee working at Paul Anderson Company and Scriveners, enjoyed her career, but her true joy came from her family. She and Tony delighted in taking their kids (Anthony, Gary, and Julie) to Garner State Park, traveling to softball tourneys (often with her comadres and their families), and as the family grew, hosting all-day holiday gatherings that now included daughter-in-law Sarah, son-in-law Michael, and grandson-in-law Jacob.
Margaret was affectionately known as "Gueli" to her beloved grandchildren: Amanda, Zack, Angelina, Amelia, Elias, and Ellena, as well as her great-grandson, Ezekiel. Margaret’s greatest delight was being an Abuelita, creating lasting memories with her grandchildren through cooking, planting flowers, caring for her beloved dogs, watching old movies, painting, feeding the birds and any other animal that walked close to the house. Quite the jokester, we learned early on that pranks were one of her love languages. Margaret was also a great storyteller and some of her tales may have even been true.
Margaret leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and friendship, forever remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing her. She joins countless friends in heaven, where her spirit will continue to shine brightly.
A Celebration of Margaret’s Life will be held at Porter Loring Funeral Home, 1101 McCullough Ave, San Antonio, TX 78212, on May 12, 2026, with a visitation starting at 10:30 a.m. followed by a service beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Interment will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m.
She asked that we not wear black, but instead wear bright colors and celebrate a life well lived. The family requests that you honor her memory by sharing kind gestures or laughs with someone you love.
