

Margaret Shirley “Peggy” Hansen Oakes, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother went to be in the loving arms of our Lord Jesus Christ, on Thursday March 17, 2011 in San Antonio, TX at the age of 90 years. Peggy was born on July 1, 1920 in Seattle, Washington to Frank Paul and Selma Sophia (Amdol) Hansen. Peggy married Charles Lee Oakes, Jr. in Seattle, Washington on January 4, 1943 while he was serving in the U. S. Coast Guard. They subsequently moved to San Antonio, Texas where they raised their family. They also lived in Cotulla and Millett, Texas. Peggy’s life was centered on her Lord, her family, and many friends. She greatly loved the Lord and was a faithful servant to whatever the Lord led her to do. She was a faithful member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church. Her greatest talent was hospitality and befriending everyone she met. She devoted her life to caring for her family and many friends. She nurtured trees and flowers with her green thumb and danced with a troupe of line dancers for several years, well into her 80’s. She was loved by all and will be dearly missed. Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Lee Oakes, Jr.; two sons, Roger and Tommy Oakes; and two sisters, Doris & Jane. She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Jayne Oakes Martinez (Marvin); and her sons, Barry Oakes (Mindy), Chuck Oakes (Michelle), and Frank Oakes (Evelyn); and her 9 grandchildren, Shane, Trey, Barry, Jr., Damon, Jason, Harlan, Julie, Corbin, Tyler; and 11 great-grandchildren. Viewing will be on Sunday, March 20, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home. Church services will be held on Monday, March 21, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 16320 Huebner Rd. San Antonio, TX. Interment will be in family cemetery in Millett, TX. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peggy’s name to the Cancer Therapy & Research Center, by calling, 210-450-1000, or to St. Andrew Lutheran Church.
