Maria Juanita Torres Siordia entered into her eternal rest on April 26, 2024. Maria was born to Juana Lopez and Agustin Torres. Maria was known to her children as “Mom” and “Nana”, to her family as “Nena”, and to her friends as “Janie” or “Maria”.
Maria graduated from Fox Tech High School in 1954. After high school, she worked as a Cosmetologist prior to starting her 30-year career as a Federal Civil Servant in 1956 with the Department of Defense, Army Mapping Agency, as a Cartographer. She was a proud single mother of two, daughter Elvira and son Hector. She, in her words, “found her work interesting, challenging, tedious and even nerve wrecking at times”. After retirement, she enjoyed over 35 years in retirement learning and working at several jobs (Beautician, Certified Nurse Assistant, Six Flags summer worker, Catering by Rosemary [server/ concessions/banquet]. She enjoyed traveling with her children, especially to Las Vegas. She enjoyed meeting her friends and doing activities at the Elvira Cisneros Senior Center.
Maria thanked God for her good health, a good job, and the will and ability to help others, whenever possible. She served as the contact person in numerous projects such as Savings Bond Drives, Combined Federal Campaigns, Recreation Committee and especially the Needy Families program. She enjoyed cooking breakfast tacos and bringing pan dulce for her coworkers. She was lucky to have been able to donate blood for over 20 years. She enjoyed photography, dancing, listening to the tunes of Vicente Fernandez and attending his music concerts, Fiesta and festivals, Walking Fund Raisers (5K and 10K), and liked working in her home and garden. Maria found joy in her family and family gatherings. Maria always demonstrated her service to others and taught her children the importance of giving and service to others. Above all, her heart belonged to her children.
Maria will be reunited in heaven with her beloved parents, Juana and Agustin Torres; paternal grandmother Petra Torres and maternal grandparents Irineo and Rosario Lopez; and siblings, Frank, Jose, Bertha, Rosario, Alejandro, Dolores, Felipe, Jesse, and Agustin Jr.
“We are strong because a strong woman raised us.”
Maria's memory will forever remain alive in the hearts of her children, Elvira and Hector (Vanessa); her granddaughters Abrielle and Stephanie (Patrick Lawler); her great grandchildren, Vivienne and Dylan; and her brother Robert.
“All that I am, YOU helped me be.”
The family thanks all Maria’s angels during her life, especially during her last years: Alzheimer Association San Antonio, Guiding Light Hospice, and Meals on Wheels Alzheimer Support Team. Special thank you to her nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors, and her caretakers who held her hands, visited, brought flowers and gifts, cooked and delivered meals, called or video-chatted, and offered Maria continued support, love, care and especially laughter.
In lieu of flower arrangements, the family requests donations, in her honor, to the Alzheimer Association San Antonio & South Texas Chapter. The family will accept special donations for Maria in the form of potted plants or garden seeds. The family will transplant the potted plants and garden seeds to cultivate a memorial garden in her honor at her home.
