Marietta Rasbury Carrigan, age 98, passed away on July 27, 2021, at her San Antonio home with husband, Mark, sister Pat, and daughter Kim at her side. She was born November 4, 1922, in Monroe, Louisiana, to Walter Thomas and Ruth Grandstaff Rasbury.
She was survived by her husband of 78 years, Mark Charles Carrigan (Col, USA Ret), daughter Kimberly Carrigan, granddaughters Jane Buckley Maher and Leigh Katherine Buckley Campbell (Donald); four great-grandsons and six great-great-grandchildren. Her sister Patricia Metcalf (William), as well as numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Nora Linda Carrigan Buckley; her parents Walter and Ruth; and sisters Ruth R. Cowie and Greta R. Melickian.
Marietta married the love of her life, Mark, on March 21, 1943, during WWII. Over their 78 years together, Mark’s service as an Army and later civilian engineer led them to homes across the country and overseas. When her daughters started school, Marietta resumed her own education. She earned a BA in education, an MS in communications, and did post-masters studies in library science. She was the first member of her family to earn a university degree. Marietta’s creativity and skill brought her the honor of Washington State Media Librarian of the Year. Students and faculty alike esteemed Marietta as a gifted educator and empathetic and supportive teacher.
She was an active member of Kennewick First Presbyterian Church of Kennewick, WA, First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio, and Texas Chapter EU PEO. Marietta’s friends valued her gracious charm, keen intelligence, and generosity of spirit.
The family extends special thanks to the VITAS Hospice staff and her kind and diligent caregivers.
