

Marilyn Chapman, age 89, passed away on January 28, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas. Born on November 28, 1936, in Danville, Indiana, Marilyn lived a life defined by service, compassion, faith, and unwavering dedication to her country and community.
Marilyn is preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Nellie Hutts, her first husband, Robert Hamer, her second husband, James “Jim” Chapman, her beloved cat, and family members who loved Marilyn deeply.
She leaves behind her brother Paul & Wife Margaret Hutts and their four children, best friends Jack & Carol Lavallee, and many more friends, colleagues, and caretakers who will cherish Marilyn’s memory forever.
Marilyn pursued higher education at Saint Joseph’s College in Standish, Maine, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Professional Arts. Her education laid the foundation for what would become a distinguished and honorable career in military nursing.
A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Lieutenant Colonel Marilyn Chapman received her military honors serving on the front lines in Vietnam, in charge of field nurses bringing care to the wounded and transporting them to hospitals. She also worked as a nurse at David Grant United States Air Force Medical Center in California, where her leadership and clinical excellence made a lasting impact. At the Family Practice Clinic, she demonstrated exceptional dedication, professionalism, and compassion for service members and their families. In recognition of her outstanding work, she was awarded a Commendation Medal for meritorious service.
Throughout her military career, Marilyn earned numerous honors and badges, including the Tactical Fighter Wing Badge and the Tactical Air Command Badge, among others. She was deeply proud of her military service and the opportunity to care for those who served. Her years in uniform were not only a career but a calling, and she carried that pride and sense of purpose with her throughout her life.
After retiring from the Air Force, Marilyn made San Antonio, Texas, her home. She embraced life fully and joyfully. A devoted fan of the San Antonio Spurs, she cheered her team on with enthusiasm. She also enjoyed bowling, building lasting friendships and fond memories along the way.
Faith played a central role in Marilyn’s life. She was actively involved in her church community, where she found fellowship and opportunities to serve others. Everyone who had the honor of knowing her knew she was a very sweet, pleasant, lovely, and caring person. She had a natural gift for comforting others and a gentle spirit that made people feel welcome, valued, and loved.
Marilyn’s life was a beautiful reflection of service, strength, and kindness. She leaves behind cherished memories in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her. Her legacy of dedication, faith, and compassion will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A visitation will be held on February 17, 2026, from 9:00 am to 10:00 am at Cornerstone Church, located at 18755 Stone Oak Pkwy, San Antonio, TX 78258.
A Celebration of Life will follow on the same day, February 17, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, also at Cornerstone Church with a Reception to follow at the same location.
The committal service will take place on February 18, 2026, from 10:00 am to 10:15 am at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, located at 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209.
