Mari was beautiful even into her later years like a smaller version of Sophia Loren.  It was not long after meeting her that I realized that her Felipe added the musical score to her life and she missed him in a silence when he died.  She loved beautiful flowers, elephants with uplifted trunks, pretty jewelry especially rings, and cheerful surroundings.  Work in her home seemed important to her for she often mentioned how busy she had been doing tasks and projects around her home.  Watching children seemed to be among her favorite ways to celebrate life at parties and note her little great-grandchildren's unique qualities, often commenting on their entertaining actions during play.  I loved sitting near her for family gatherings to hear her perspectives and spontaneous observations.  We both possessed an appreciation for Velcro rollers for taming and directing hair into gentle waves.  She noticed proportions on haircuts, too, and was happy to use her skills to offer haircuts to family members.  I loved how her eyes would open wide before sharing an idea she had been pondering.  Her bright eyes never dimmed even as her health did so.  She will be missed for the strong person she was but will be remembered as her descendants discover bits of her in their drive, aesthetic sensibilities, and love for living.

Letter to Mom
Mom, at this time, we gather together to honor and celebrate your tenderness, love and life. The impact of your and dad’s life lessons to each one of us (family and friends) has been tremendous. I am so blessed to have shared 72 years of your 94 years of life with you. What a voyage you have had. The constants during your time with us were love of dad, family, friends, car trips, Las Vegas penny machines, education, love of life and crispy tacos.  I can see you in the faces of every one of my siblings and the smiles on every person you came in contact with in life. It is said that you never really die if you believe in Christ and as long as you are remembered by someone who loves you.  You will continue to live forever in our love, the stories we will share of you with new generations and in the kingdom of God.
While we are saddened with your leaving, we will be ok because of you love, teaching and support from one another. I am so proud of how you lived your life, your accomplishments and being your son. It is your time to rest, to be reunited with loved ones who have passed before you and are rejoicing at your reuniting together and to be with our Lord. Give dad a big hug and kiss from us all. I pray to God to bless you in every way for all eternity. Till the day it is our turn to be reunited with you and other loved ones in Heaven, you will always be in our hearts and mind. Mamasan, I will always Luv Ya Mucho! What better words than are in Proverbs: 31:31 as we “Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise .... Her life was filled with works as she served in her roles as wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother amongst many others. By God's grace we will all be reunited.

From nickels, to late midnight celebrations for Christmas and New Year's, to long road trips, to telling on us for not brushing our teeth for long enough, (even though her secret was that she didn't either), I have countless memories with my Grandma that I can choose to describe in detail. One that I wont forget, however, was when she (and my grandpa) would cut mine and my dad's hair. It was simple enough, decently quick, but what I will remember most about it is her getting older and coming out as...a regular person. 

When I was little, Grandma was the disciplinarian who made sure we were in line, and kept the family line, kept Grandpa in line, perfectly in sync with her ideology for a family. But as I got older, she became more human. As an adult, the haircuts were different. They were times when Grandma confided things in me, expressed her concerns, worries, regrets, curiosities, and interests, and it taught me that ALL of us are all trying our hardest to do what is right, even though we second guess constantly. Still, for many years, she moved forward, always strong when we needed her to be. 

I chose that picture due to her commitment to her marriage...her mantra was - paraphrased - loving couples fight constantly. Fighting is good!...I'm not sure "constantly" is necessarily right, but what is true is that you do need to fight for keeping together the things are are worth it, and nothing worth having is easy to get. And as we all know, my Grandma was a FIGHTER.  She lived a long life and happy life, and she will be loved and missed by me and many others. I am happy that my Grandpa will finally have his partner in crime back to keep from getting in trouble up there.

Thank you for being my Mama.  You had such a profound impact on my life.  You taught me to love unconditionally, to trust, and to see life clearly and stay focused.  Your life example taught me to be a strong, loving wife, mother, and grandmother.  Thank you for your multiple sacrifices that secured our family’s successes.  We knew we would graduate from college at an early age.  We knew we were going to “make something” of ourselves.  We knew we could return to a safe home.  We always knew we were loved, no matter what.  I wish everyone in the world was guaranteed these things.  We were truly blessed.  May God bring you gently into His loving arms.  May all your pain be gone.  May you smile your greatest smile forever.  Until we meet again, always feel my deep love and gratitude for you.  Love Always and Forever, Debbie.

I will never forget your many words of wisdom, but most importantly, I will never forget how courageously you lived your life.
