With heavy, yet grateful hearts, the family of Marge Massari announces her passing to the glory of God on June 9, 2023. To know she is in the embrace of God, whom she sought earnestly through her life, gives us comfort and joy.
Marge was born on December 6, 1929, in San Antonio. Her parents Henry and Tillie (Beghe) Mezzetti raised four children: Gloria, Valerie, Marge and Mike; all preceded her in death. Marge attended St. Ann’s Catholic School, Incarnate Word High School and the University of Texas at Austin, studying journalism, geology and sciences. She completed her education at Incarnate Word College, so she could help care for her father in his final year. She then began working as a medical technologist at different medical facilities, one of them, Fort Sam. There, she went to a staff picnic where she met medical student Rudy Massari. They fell in love and married on June 12, 1956. They were just shy of celebrating 67 years of marriage at the time of Marge’s passing. Their marriage was a beautiful partnership of loving dedication and support.
Marge and Rudy started married life in Galveston so he could finish medical school, and their first child, Karen was born. Medical residency took them to Houston, where two more children came along, Greg and Jon. The couple moved back to San Antonio where Rudy set up practice. Marge supported the family by working through Rudy’s medical training and always said she was thrilled to quit to be a full-time mother and homemaker. That was her greatest joy and she achieved expert status, lovingly nurturing her husband and kids through their lives, with a patient, listening heart and wise counsel. The Massari home was a cheerful gathering place for family and friends, great food and warm hospitality.
Marge was an active member of St. Luke’s parish for 60 years serving the school and church. Marge was Catholic to the core, embracing her faith not just by practice, but through continual learning and seeking spiritual growth, with others. A turning point in her faith life was the study of scripture through the interdenominational Bible Study Fellowship. When Catholic Scripture Study was developed as an off shoot, Marge took it to St. Luke’s, coordinating the study for years. Then, with other faith seekers she started a spiritual book club that was a great joy of her later years. The group deeply shared faith journeys, laughs, and dear friendships.
Marge bravely and without complaint took on the difficulties of older age. The recent time of her total dependence allowed the family to nurture her in a very close and special way. With far fewer words, and gentle looks of love, her contemplative heart grew even more.
The family is indebted to the staff of BeeHive Homes of Crownridge for exceptional care, as well as Embrace Hospice, especially RN Christelle Kukeya. Marge is survived by her husband Dr. Rudolph Massari, children Karen Braeuler (Peter), Greg Massari (Mollie) and Dr. Jon Massari (Susan) as well as grandchildren Philip Massari (Hollis), Jason Braeuler, Margaret Yancy (Wes), Annie Massari, Lizzie Massari, Kaylee Johnson, Emily Johnson, Matthew Massari and the late Evan Braeuler, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends. Join us to celebrate her life, Tuesday June 20 at St. Luke Catholic Church, 4603 Manitou 78228 with praying of the rosary at 8:30 am, followed by the Mass of Resurrection at 9:00 am.
