Mark Lynn Backous

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, January 16, 2026, at Schriver’s Memorial Chapel, with Pastor Matt Spoden officiating.

Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery following the service.

A time for fellowship and lunch will follow the burial at Schriver’s Memorial Fellowship Center.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements. Family and friends may sign the online guestbook at www.schriversmemorial.com. Services will be recorded and posted on Schriver’s Facebook following the service.

Mark Lynn Backous was born on August 29, 1961, and grew up in Aberdeen, South Dakota. It was there that he met his wife, Betty. Mark and Betty were married on December 31, 1991.

The two moved to Torrance, California, where Mark worked as a medical secretary alongside his physician father-in-law. After living in California for 7 years, Mark and Betty moved to San Antonio, Texas, and built their home there. Mark began work in utility construction, operating heavy equipment. He eventually retired due to medical disability.

Mark enjoyed music, cooking, animals, and taking trips with his family. He especially enjoyed any trips involving swimming and the beach. His creative side showed in his cooking, many home projects, and repairs.

Those who knew Mark would remember him for his loyalty, sense of humor, strength, determination, support, and love of family. He will be dearly missed by his family.

Mark is survived by his wife Betty; daughters Melissa Aaker and Jessica Backous; son Andrew Backous; brothers Douglas Backous, Cecil Backous and Elden Backous; sister Charlotte Backous; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded by his father, Elden Backous; mother, Patricia Backous; brothers Rick Backous, Sam Backous; and sister Gloria Backous.

Family prefers memorials to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
