Marna (Marti) Clarine McWhorter, age 97, passed away of natural causes on December 13, 2019. Marti was born on November 16, 1922 in Kirksville, Missouri, one of five children of Merton and Opal Rowe. The family moved to Albuquerque, because of the dry climate, a few years later, on the advice of the family doctor. Shortly after graduation from Albuquerque High school she met and later married Clyde Clifton McWhorter in 1942. The family doubled in size with the arrival of twins, Ted and Fred. The family continued to grow. Marti had four beloved sons: Ted Allan McWhorter (Gail), Fred Austin McWhorter (Becky), Robert Rowe McWhorter (Cindy) and David Kurt McWhorter (Linda). A military family they were, moving every few years from one Air Force Base to the next. The overarching values of the family unit centered on Christian faith and patriotism: A love of God and country. The family moved to San Antonio, Texas in 1964.
Marti was blessed as a grandmother to six fine grandchildren: Robin Gail Cannello (Seth), Todd Adam McWhorter (Cassandra), Ami Melissa Smith (Rusty), Christina Nicole McWhorter, Matthew Alan McWhorter and Jonathan McWhorter. Marti was further blessed with nine great grandchildren: Amber Rose Cannello, Brooke Taylor Cannello, Cara Joy Cannello, Bryce Alan McWhorter, Evan Michael McWhorter, Cade Adam McWhorter, Spencer James Smith, Camille Grace Smith and Dayna Gwen Smith. Marti’s generosity and loving nature were known to all, and she was very proud of the entire family. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Marti worked for many years at Randolph Air Force Base until her retirement. She was a member of Cornerstone Church. She was active in the Bexar County Women’s Republican Association for many years. She served as historian and was a representative for the naturalized citizenship ceremonies.
