Martha grew up in Lamesa, but graduated from Temple High School where she was voted Most Beautiful in her class. She competed in beauty contests and was named runner up in a Miss West Texas pageant. After high school, Martha attended Texas Christian University where she studied art. But the most significant moment of her college life was when she met the love of her life, and partner for 57 years of marriage, Kenneth Miller, on the TCU campus. They married on Saturday, January 25th, 1958.
She moved to Petersburg, VA after college while Ken was serving at Fort Lee Virginia in the US Army. She eventually retired with her husband to San Antonio, TX.
She had several hobbies throughout her life. She loved to paint in her early years and competed and won several blue ribbons at the State Fair of Texas with this skill. She was a novice piano player and loved Elvis Presley music and Priscilla Presley. She was an avid writer and wrote numerous publications for People magazine, 60 Minutes and both Houston newspapers. She was a ghost writer for the Houston Post, where she wrote the daily prayer for several years. She enjoyed writing for and collecting autographs. This allowed her to meet numerous high profile people in her life including entertainers, politicians, athletes, astronauts, and business leaders. She also enjoyed collecting and refurbishing antiques. She enjoyed appearing in several movies including Tin Cup and Miss Congeniality too. As she grew older, her favorite pastime was keeping up with friends through Facebook.
Martha and Ken also had the privilege of working as volunteers for George H.W. Bush and Mrs. Bush, which was a memory she enjoyed. In this role she got to be good friends with the Bushes. However, Martha's life was not defined by her achievements or hobbies. She was a loving wife, a kind and generous mother and grandmother, and most importantly a servant of Christ. Her love for her family and Christ were paramount to her. One of her favorite memories was her two trips to the Holy Land, where she saw where Jesus walked. Throughout her life she constantly mentioned how she loved Jesus and remained a great encourager. She was a dedicated Christian and follower of Christ. Martha loved the Lord with all her heart and soul.
