Born Martha Evelyn Hill, August 29, 1912, in Roanoke, Virginia to the late Ella Thraves Hill and Dr. P.B. Hill, beloved former pastor of First Presbyterian Church, San Antonio and first radio preacher in South Texas, she spent the first years of her life in Korea where her parents were missionaries.
Known as "Eve" to friends in school, she graduated from Westmoreland, San Antonio, then attended Queen's College, Charlotte, North Carolina. She taught English and History at Jefferson High School.
Following her marriage in 1939 to Raymond Harvey Armstrong, she resided in Houston until 1951. She returned to San Antonio in that same year to teach sixth grade at Serna Elementary School.
From 1966 until 2000, she held a Sunday morning broadcast entitled "Witness" over radio station KDRY.
Diversity characterized the friendships and interests of this noble and vibrant lady. These interests focused primarily on spiritual growth and development, politics, education, natural health and philanthropy.
Her active work with youth at the Hill Country Cowboy Camp Meeting, Mountain Home, Texas, and Child Evangelism Fellowship Association underscored her firm belief in the importance of Christian formation of the young. At their request, she became a spiritual mentor of the following young ladies: Christine Shaw Moorman, Erin Gardiner Bowman, Tonya Wood Mallory, all of San Antonio, Cris Crouch Graham of Fredericksburg, and Anne Petty Connally of Houston.
Always keenly aware of current geopolitical events and underlying spiritual causes, her chief concern was every person's eternal spiritual condition. A true servant of her Lord, Our Saviour Jesus Christ, she was a constant witness of His grace.
Staunchly independent, she enjoyed membership in First Presbyterian Church where she participated in Circle 2, Kappa Delta Sorority, Hill Country Cowboy Camp Meeting Association and Concerned Women of America.
She was preceded in death by her two daughters, Ella Reed Armstrong Brewer and Anna Bernard Armstrong, both of San Antonio.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Raymond H. Armstrong of San Antonio, her daughter, Anna Catherine Armstrong, MD of Houston, her brother Brig.Gen.ret. David Lee "Tex" Hill, USAF and grandson, William Louis Brewer II, both of San Antonio, and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Her daily exclamation of "Isn't it wonderful to be a Christian!?" and valedictory "God keep you!" are and will continue to be missed.
Pallbearers: William Louis Brewer, II, Samuel Bernard Hill, Jr., David Bernard Hill, Douglas John Hill, Dale Van Arsdall, Thomas Slick Moorman, Richard M. "Tres" Kleberg III, John Murchison Mallory. Honorary pallbearers: Ralph Wells, MD, O. Roger Hollan, MD, Walter Sjoberg, MD.
Memorials may be made to Child Evangelism Fellowship Association or Pregnancy Care San Antonio.
The family expresses deep appreciation to Mrs. Armstrong's caretakers from Visiting Angels for their devoted care during her final months.
