Martha DePriest Redman was born on September 15, 1928, along with her twin sister, Marjorie, at home, in Nashville, TN. She had her sights set on becoming a missionary, but after a year in seminary, she decided that was not the route she should take.
Marti decided that she would see the world in a career God designed for her which was nursing. She graduated from Peabody College for Teachers, which was later acquired by Vanderbilt University, and received her nurse’s cap from East Tennessee Baptist School of Nursing.
As a nurse, she served in nine different Veterans Administration centers across the country, and found that working in the surgical units was the most gratifying. Marti also worked as a flight nurse in the Air Force reserves from 1962 until 1983, when she retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Marti was the quintessential caregiver. She cared for our mother and we owe her a debt of gratitude. Marti married our father, Travis Holland Redman in Bandera, Texas in 1987 and they spent years traveling the country in their motor home.
Our dad passed away in 2002, and Marti moved to San Antonio to live out the rest of her life. She was blessed with deep friendships and remarkable caregivers.
She is survived by her stepchildren: Travis “Dutch” Redman, (Chris) Harriet Redman Sollberger, (Darrell), and Cynthia Redman Hoff, (David), and 7 grandchildren.
We would like to thank all the caregivers and friends who enriched her life with love.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Martha DePriest Redman Endowed Scholarship for Undergraduate Nursing Education at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, 7703 Floyd Curl Drive, San Antonio, Tx. 78229.
