Marvell is preceded in death by his mother Lillie Bell Brittman White, and his brother Stevie Benard Shaw. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 17 years (23 years combined), Genevieve Shaw and his two loving daughters Sierrah Shaw and Kaitlynn Shaw. He is also survived by his beloved sisters Tracey Reuben (Tamondo) of Pensacola, FL, Lisa Woodard (Michael Woodard) of Kissimmee, FL, Kimberly Shaw of Pensacola, FL, his Dear Stepfather Robert White (Gail White) of Pensacola, FL, Dear In Laws Arnulfo Garza (Linda), Brother In Law Armando Garza, and a host of beautiful nieces, nephews, two surviving aunts, cousins, family, friends, colleagues, and fellow members of faith at Community Bible Church of San Antonio.
Marvell was born in Memphis, Tennessee on December 15, 1975. He was a proud graduate of Pine Forest High School in Pensacola, Florida. He enjoyed playing sports such as basketball and football and was an avid and loyal fan of the Florida State Seminoles and San Antonio Spurs. Soon after high school, he joined the United States Army where he served four years (1996-2000) at Fort Hood located in Killeen, Texas. While serving he met his wife Genevieve Shaw in 1997, and they continued to enjoy life together as they welcomed their two beautiful daughters into the world. Marvell continued to serve his country even after he got out of the military. After 9/11/2001 and the terror attack on our nation, he felt compelled to join and serve with the Department of Homeland Security working with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for the last 18 years of his life. Marvell was such a compassionate, charming, loving, caring, empathetic, funny, humble, loyal, committed, and God fearing man. He touched so many, would conversate with so many, could connect with so many, and made so many of us laugh easily. When his oldest daughter began to play sports, Marvell’s truest passion came to life which involved Coaching his daughters Volleyball team with the YMCA of San Antonio. Marvell’s destined and dream job was to be a Teacher and Coach, and his talent really ignited the children he coached, and they had fun. He committed to Volunteer Coaching for four good years and many YMCA seasons gaining lifelong friendships and comradery. Marvell’s coaching strengthened his relationship with his daughter especially as she continued to pursue sports at the Middle School and High School level. His youngest daughter looked up to him as her Hero and protector and kept Marvell on his toes since she was 8 years younger than the oldest daughter. But they both understood each other and watched over each other as she would get him a blanket or just lean over to give him a kiss. There is so much we will all miss out on, but we must have faith he is in a better place, as they say God takes the good ones! We know he is with his dear Mother and Brother who meant so much to him. Marvell anticipated finishing up his degree in this next coming year before his oldest was to graduate High School. He was a family man and protector, always sitting at an angle to watch the door of a restaurant and not have his back against a possible threat. He loved his family and friends, enjoyed dancing to Michael Jackson and many other songs, playing spades, brushing up on history trivia and politics (even playing Kahoot.it with family over Christmas), and could easily lift anyone’s spirits and make you laugh knowing exactly what to say at the right times. Marvell was a man of faith and had found his home with Community Bible Church and had his death to life baptism in 2019. Ultimately, he was the best girl dad anyone could ask for as he was knowingly outnumbered at home with his wife and kids, yet he took on the challenge and took care of his ladies no matter what was asked of him. As the following quote goes from John 16:22 “Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.”
The Shaw family is humbled by the overwhelming response they have received by those who have been touched by Marvell’s life. It is with heartfelt gratitude the family thanks all those who loved and cared for him. The beautiful memories others have of him will live on and his values will carry on.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the San Antonio Food Bank, or the Children’s Shelter of San Antonio. He was also fond of donating his blood and plasma frequently to the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center.
Family and friends will be received on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at Porter Loring North from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.
