

It is with deep sadness and heavy heart that we announce the passing of Mary Eugenia Johnson Baird from cancer on February 20, 2023, in San Antonio, TX. Mary was a devoted wife, loving mother, doting grandmother, generous daughter, sister, and friend. She chose to live a life of meaningful acts of love and service by faithfully serving in civil service positions, volunteering, and being a consistent advocate for those in need. She received her Master of Arts degree in Counseling Services cum laude, from Rider College, Lawrenceville, NJ, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English cum laude from St. Mary’s College, Leavenworth, Kansas. Mary served as Transitional Services Manager and Volunteer Services Coordinator for SAMMinistries for 7 years and the Department of Family and Protective Services (CPS) for 13 years. She was a dedicated volunteer instructor for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and President of the St. Matthew’s Catholic Church Mission and Cancer Support Group. Mary was the recent Secretary for the Pastoral Council and choir member for the children’s Mass and Commentator.
Mary is survived by her devoted husband, Raymond D. Baird, five children: Daniel S. Baird (wife Claudia Valenzuela), Jeanette M. Bruno (husband John), Timothy D. Baird, Theresa M. Kirk (husband Michael), and Christopher F. Baird. Ten grandchildren; Stephen Tyler, Daniel Trenton, Daniella, Alejandra, Seth, Syrus, Ashley, Margo, Karen, and Zoe. Her surviving siblings are Margaret Johnson Williams of Denver, CO, Louis Johnson of Wheat Ridge, CO, Walter Johnson (wife Louise Ramunno-Johnson) of Vancouver, WA. Mary is deeply missed and forever in our hearts.
On Tuesday, March 14, 2023, a viewing will take place between 5 to 9 p.m. with a community rosary scheduled at 7 p.m. followed by a eulogy at the Funeraria del Angel Trevino, 226 Cupples Rd, SA, TX 78237. A Celebration of Life Mass will be held on Wednesday, March 15, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 10703 Wurzbach Rd, SA, TX 78230. Burial will occur immediately following the service at 11:30 a.m. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd., SA, TX 78209. Reception in Parish Hall at St. Matthew Catholic Church.
