

On June 15, 2023, a cherished mother, wife, sister, aunt and best friend, Mary Ellen Burns (known affectionately as Mare to her family and friends), 66, of Universal City, Texas passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer. She is remembered by family and friends as a beautiful, intelligent, insightful woman with an incredible sense of caring for others and rarely beatable at Scrabble, Boggle and Words with Friends!
Mare, the second of six children, was born on July 7, 1956, to Don and Cathy Burns in Elizabeth, NJ. She was raised in a loving family who resided in Fanwood and Scotch Plains, NJ, New Orleans, LA and finally Houston, Texas in her sophomore year of high school. After graduating from Cypress Fairbanks High School in 1974, she attended The University of Texas at Austin where she earned her Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in 1978. Her sojourner spirit took her on a yearlong inspirational backpacking trip through Europe and Israel. She later returned to UT at Austin where she earned her Master of Science in Social Work in 1987.
Mare’s commitment to others and caring spirit is exemplified by her 40 plus years in the social services field including positions with Catholic Charities, Child Protective Services, United Way of Texas and retiring in 2021 as Senior Vice President, Grant Implementation at United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County. It has been said that she is one of the few who is "all things right in this world".
Mare is survived by her loving husband of 27 years, Rev Dr Peter W Barlow and their pride and joy, daughter, Hannah Catherine Burns Barlow; Mare’s siblings, Anne (Robert) Northam of Spring, Texas; Patricia (Howard, Esq.) King of Kingwood, Texas; Kathleen Boni (Bob Bonsignore) of Houston, Texas; Thomas Burns (Daniel Moss) of Murphy, Texas; 20 nieces and nephews and 28 great nieces and nephews and many dear friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and younger sister sweet Caroline (David) Salak.
We invite you to join in celebrating Mare’s life at Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2102 N. Loop 1604 E, San Antonio, TX 78232 on July 8, 2023, at 1:00 p.m with reception to follow.
