Mary Oliver Heppes, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas. She was born on February 13, 1935, in San Antonio, Texas to her parents Myrtle Carl and Herbert Oliver. Mary is preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Lawrence Heppes; brothers, John Oliver, and Robert Oliver; and grandchildren: Schuyler Veldt, Mary Grace Veldt, and Cameron Veldt.
Mary was born and grew up in San Antonio, Texas. Through the influence of her mother, who passed away when Mary was 11, she met the anchor of her life, the Lord Jesus. Mary graduated from Alamo Heights High School then went to The University of Texas in Austin where she was a Kappa Kappa Gamma. She then transferred to Trinity University where she graduated and met the love of her life, Larry Heppes. They married in 1958 and before their first wedding anniversary Mary’s dream to be a mother was fulfilled. She and Larry grew their family over the next 10 years to a total of four children whom she loved dearly. She was also committed to her church and was considered a mentor to many women she encountered. Mary had the gift of hospitality and opened her home for Bible studies, church, and family events and even a friend’s wedding. Whenever a home was needed for an event, she was always willing and available to open hers. As a couple, Mary and her husband were instrumental in bringing Bible Study Fellowship to San Antonio where she was the class administrator for many years. Mary worked alongside Larry at the family bookstore, The Scripture Stall, that they owned for 38 years. Mary enjoyed selling books, Bibles and gifts to anyone who visited their shop and was always willing to be a listening ear. Mary was a devoted “Memaw” to 16 grandchildren, never missing a game or event if possible. She lived to watch some of her grandchildren marry and have children of their own. She then loved getting to know her 11 great grandchildren, and they loved her in return.
She is survived by her brother, Harry Oliver and her children: Julie Goudge (Bobby), Molly Veldt (Matt), Lawrence “Geoff” Heppes, Jr. (Stephanie), and Andrew Heppes (Nancy); grandchildren: Robert Goudge (Marley), Elliott Goudge (Katelyn), Cheston Goudge (SaraBeth), Turner Goudge, Hannah Sale (Doug), Calvin Veldt, Tristan Veldt, Sasi Veldt, Haley Pinard (Sean), Geoff Heppes, Karly Martinez (Austin), Shack Heppes (Kathryn), and Ellie Heppes; great-grandchildren: Charlotte, Patsy, Mac, Law, Eberly, Kessly, Tenley, Birdie, Mary Frances, Iris, Emmy, with two more on the way.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 3, 2023, at Wayside Chapel. 1705 NW Loop 410 San Antonio, TX 78213. Interment will be private for family only at San Fernando III. Please click here to view a recording of Mary's service.
