Miss Maurer was a lifelong resident of San Antonio and had been cared for by her cousins, Jim, Carla and Elaine Zuercher of Gallatin, Texas since March of 2008 and at Bonner Place Nursing Home in Jacksonville, Texas for the past 14 months where she died on August 17, 2010.
She attended Fannin Elementary, Poe Jr. High School and St. Joseph's Academy. Marynel has been a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church, being baptized on November 24, 1927 shortly after her birth on October 5, 1927.
She is the daughter of Rudolph Maurer, Jr. and Stella Stricker Maurer. Marynel affirmed her baptism at that time called confirmation on April 9, 1941. She along with her parents and grandparents on both sides were faithful members of St. John's. Marynel was a "Pioneer" and active "Circle" member extending her kindness and generosity to others. Evidence that her family was active in St. John's is that one of the stained glass windows in the present sanctuary is in memory of her grandfather, Rudolph Maurer. It is located in the east side of the church, the window you face directly when you enter the church from the Chapel Narthex.
Although Marynel was an only child, she made lots of friends and had a full and active life. Her early focus was on her church together with her mother and taking care of her parents until the day they died.
Later she turned that same caring to her mother's friends, to other family members, and to most everyone she knew. She loved traveling with many kindred spirits to all parts of this great country usually by car and many times staying at the homes of families and friends along the way. Marynel was always a treat to have visit.
She also enjoyed "keeping up" with her place on the Guadalupe River at Spring Branch, entertaining lots of her friends there. Her activities kept her active in the city she loved and was so proud of. This precious lady was a fixture at Luby's and Earl Abel's for many years. Marynel loved to chat with the friendly staff at both restaurants and had many good friends and wonderful neighbors.
She is survived by cousins, Jim and Carla Zuercher of Gallatin, Texas, Robert and Nancy Zuercher of Clarkston, Washington, Rodney and Barbara Zuercher of San Antonio, Texas, Barry and Tracy Zuercher of San Antonio, Texas, Elaine Zuercher of Gallatin, Karen Zuercher of San Antonio, Kenneth Zuercher, Sr. and Barbara Busch of Seguin, Kenneth, Jr. and Cindy Zuercher of San Antonio, Lana Z. Kaminski of Victoria, Mark and Jo Zuercher of Spring Branch, Marty Zuercher of Jacksonville, Florida, Mrs. Phillip Erna Day of San Antonio and Tusnelda Byram of San Antonio; Godchildren, Jim Day of Waldorf, Maryland, Chandler Smith of Mission, Texas, Elaine Zuercher of Gallatin, Texas and Jim Zuercher of Gallatin, Texas.
The family would like to thank the staff at Bonner Place, Trinity Mother Francis Hospital of Jacksonville, Texas and East Texas Hospice of Tyler for their wonderful care of Marynel and their kindness to the family.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 20, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Porter Loring.
