Max Hulin, age 66, went to be with Jesus on Monday, March 29, 2021 in San Antonio, Texas. Max was born in Winfield, Kansas on July 18, 1954 to parents Donald and Phyllis Hulin. Shortly thereafter Don and Phyllis moved with their four children to Oregon where there was promise of a better life. The family continued to grow, making Max the fourth of seven children. Times were not always easy, but Max’s parents always provided what the children needed. Second-hand anything was a normal part of life. This became interesting for Max as sometimes his hand-me-downs came from his two older sisters. Max was raised to work hard and help others in need. Growing up on a farm, there were numerous chores – one of the least favorite chores for Max was cleaning out the chicken house.
As a young teenager, Max began his career in the restaurant business. One of his earliest jobs involved picking up bottles in the parking lot of an A&W. He had much success throughout his restaurant career and served as a Regional Vice President. He ended his career as a business consultant with Dairy Queen. His long career took him all over the country including Oregon, California, Washington, Arizona, Texas, Kentucky, and Indiana. He was very skilled in his work, but this was not his passion.
Max’s passion began after re-acquainting with his high school friend, Sandy. They began dating and within a year they were married on September 18, 1976. In March of 1980 they welcomed their daughter, Becky, and then in January of 1982 they were blessed with another daughter, Wendy. Max was so proud of his girls and the amazing Godly women they had become. He was just as proud of his sons-in-law and grandchildren.
Right alongside of his love for his family was his love and commitment to Christ. Anyone who knew Max Hulin knew of his two true loves: his family and his God. If you were to look up the definition of a servant’s heart, there would be a picture of Max. The Lord used him to teach God’s word and minister to people in whatever their circumstances were. This led to changed lives, stronger marriages, and a sense of belonging for so many. By example, he gently brought people along as they came to and grew in their own walk of faith.
Another way Max expressed his love for Jesus was through his love of singing. Whatever other ways he served in his church, he was always involved in music.
Even though Max’s work moved them on a regular basis, they made the decision early on to invest in their church family as if they were going to be there forever, making many friendships that have endured over time.
Max demonstrated God’s love in everything he did. It was just a bonus that he was an amazing man who loved us intensely and made us laugh constantly.
He was preceded in death by his parents Don and Phyllis Hulin; and his niece, Brandi Donaldson.
Max is survived by his wife, Sandy Hulin; his daughter, Becky Lavin, son-in-law Josh; grandchildren Kinsey and Maddie; his daughter, Wendy Andrews, son-in-law Thomas; grandchildren Gavin, Bailey and Alec; siblings Joe Hulin, Dona Thomas, Dana Cory, Rex Hulin, Von Hulin, and Rayleen Nevis.
