Maxine was the only daughter of Walter and Gertrude Nelson, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Gilbert Davis Jr. and her oldest son, William G. Davis, III.
Maxine attended St. Luke's Hospital Nursing School in Chicago Illinois as soon as she was old enough to qualify for admission, after having received her high school diploma at age fifteen.
In 1942, she entered the Army Nurse Corp as a Lieutenant to care for our soldiers during World War II. She worked as a Nurse Anesthetist in Surgery which she enjoyed immensely. She had considered attending Medical School but, while stationed in Georgia she met and married her husband, a career Army officer.
After serving her term in the Army she continued to work as a Nurse doing private duty for acute care patients. This was a good choice as she followed her husband from post to post traveling as far as Japan. Once her children came along she worked 11pm to 7am so that her children would not suffer from her absence.
She and her husband decided to settle in San Antonio after falling in love with the city while being stationed here. Maxine went to work at SW Texas Methodist hospital shortly after it opened working a schedule that allowed her to be home for her kids. She soon became Head Nurse of the Emergency Room, where she worked for over fifteen years before setting up and running the first Employee Health Clinic providing care to employees as well as required screening and immunizations. She worked at that position until her retirement at the age of 72.
Maxine was a devoted and loving mother who sacrificed much for her children. She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Michelle Hine, her son, Michael N. Davis, grandchildren, Joshua M. Powell, Lucas N. Powell, Aaron J. Davis, Michael N. Davis Jr. and Timothy Davis as well as great grandchildren, Mackenzie L. Powell and Abigail M. Powell. Words hardly express how much she was loved.
Donations can be made in her honor to St. Jude's Hospital at www.stjude.org.
