Melida De La Garza Gonzalez

Our beloved mother Melida De La Garza Gonzalez passed away June 24, 2016, on her 71st wedding anniversary. Melida was born on October 8, 1924 to Candelaria and Francisco De La Garza. She grew up in San Antonio and graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1944. Melida married Raymond Elizondo Gonzalez on June 24, 1945, until his death on June 21, 1979. Melida devoted her life based on her strong Catholic values in raising her family, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

After her husband's death, Melida worked as a business manager for a dental practice and information systems for the Baptist hospital until her retirement. Melida loved her sewing, quilting and crocheting classes. She made beautiful quilts and afghans for her family. She enjoyed her monthly bunco club and weekly bingo gatherings with family and friends.

Melida was preceded in death by her six sisters; her parents; husband; and relatives.

Melida is survived by her children, son, Dr. Raymond (Beth) Gonzalez; daughters, Irma (Gus) Gonzalez-Strautman, and Laura (James) Gonzalez-Buentello; grandchildren, Michelle (Jeff) McCombs, Jennifer (Jon) Eckert, Jonathan Gonzalez, and Lola Buentello; great-grandchildren, Justin Morgan, Tiffany and Cassidy McCombs, Jasmine, Julianna and Jayden Eckert; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Emeritus Woodbridge memory care staff and Director Mary Lorenz, and Alamo Hospice staff and Nurse Lynette Sralla and Chaplain Richard Sanchez, for their loving compassionate care.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 5th from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Porter Loring on McCullough with recitation of the Rosary in the chapel at 7:00 PM.

On Wednesday, July 6th a Mass will be held at 10:30 AM at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, 102 Lorenz followed by interment in San Fernando Cemetery II. In lieu of flowers, the family request your donation to the Alzheimer's Association.
