Melvin Joseph Borel, 86, was born on January 19, 1940, in St. Martinville, Louisiana, and passed away on March 3, 2026. It is with deep love and remembrance that we honor the life of a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Melvin will be remembered as a dedicated, faithful, and steadfast presence to all who knew and loved him.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Lamar Tech (now Lamar University) and later completed the Diaconate Formation Program through the University of Dallas in conjunction with the Diocese of Dallas, reflecting his lifelong commitment to both intellectual growth and spiritual service.
Melvin began his distinguished career at Texas Instruments in 1962, where he played an integral role in pioneering military infrared and surveillance technologies. His work contributed to the development of Forward-Looking Infrared (FLIR) systems, first-generation common modules, and thermal imaging detectors used by the United States military. These innovations enabled military vehicles and aircraft to detect heat and operate effectively through darkness, smoke, and adverse weather conditions. He later continued his work in defense and technology with Honeywell OptoElectronics and Amdahl, ultimately retiring from Northern Telecom. Even in retirement, his industrious spirit continued as he worked at Lowe’s, embracing his love for building, repairing, and creating.
Melvin had a deep and abiding passion for studying the Bible. He spent countless hours comparing translations, studying original Hebrew and Greek texts through lexicons and concordances, and engaging with biblical commentaries. He actively participated in men’s Bible study groups and frequently shared his insights and messages with others.
A natural researcher and problem-solver, Melvin approached every decision—big or small—with care and curiosity, often creating detailed comparisons before making a choice. He was a true handyman who took pride in fixing, building, and designing solutions for just about anything. He was also a modern patriot who cared deeply about his country and remained engaged in civic life.
Above all, Melvin will be remembered for his unwavering love of family, friends, and country. He treasured family reunions, maintained lifelong friendships, and was always ready for an impromptu visit. He never met a stranger and never hesitated to share his faith or his convictions. His faith, his relationships, and his devotion to others were truly the heartbeat of his life.
Melvin is survived by his loving wife, Linda Oubre Falcon Borel; his brother, Vernon Joseph Borel; his children, Elizabeth Marie Borel-Simmons, Michael Lynn Borel, and Andrea Jo Borel-Johnson; and his stepchildren, Beth Ann Falcon-Garza, Barbara Lyn Falcon-Jurbala, and Brenda Lee Falcon-Washington. He also leaves behind eleven cherished grandchildren: Emily, Sara, Matthew, Dennis, Michelle, Colin, Faith, Carson, Cade, Rachel, Stephen, and Hayden along with many extended family members and dear friends.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Jacque Joseph Borel and Antoinette Olivier Borel; his siblings, Alton James Borel, Wilmer Anthony Borel, Jacque Lloyd Borel, and Jeanette Marie Borel-Linthicum; his former wife, Susan Alice Petion-Borel Clark; and his stepson, Benny Gene Falcon, Jr.
A resident of San Antonio, Texas, Melvin’s legacy lives on in the many lives he touched, the family he cherished, and the faith he boldly shared.
A chapel service is scheduled for family and friends on April 25, 2026 @ 2:00pm at Sunset North Funeral Home, 910 North Loop 1604 East, SAT 78232
