Michael (Mike) Bufler departed this world to be with his Heavenly Father on April 12, 2013. His two year battle with cancer was marked by his courageous spirit, wonderful sense of humor, and unwavering will to live life to the fullest. He was born on August 12, 1955 to Ray and Carole Bufler in Cincinnati, Ohio. While still an infant, Mike's family relocated to San Antonio in 1957. Mike graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1973 and graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1980, with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration.
Mike experienced more in his brief life than most will experience in three lifetimes. He truly believed that it wasn't how long you lived, but how you lived that was important. Mike had a variety of interests and was always looking for the next adventure. After getting his pilot's license and owning a Cessna 172, he decided to build his own airplane. Being blessed with the patience of Job, he rolled his prize possession out of the hangar after seven years of labor. It was a labor of love and he enjoyed flying it for many years. Not content with just one adventure, he moved to other experiences such as sky diving, auto racing, various marathon runs and bike races. He even took up swimming so he could swim the annual Alcatraz swim from Alcatraz prison to the shore of San Francisco a distance of one and a half miles.
Mike owned Benchmark Homes with the founding principle that every customer was part of the family. He built over 800 homes in the San Antonio and surrounding area. One of Mike's greatest qualities was his constant concern over the welfare of others. He was a unique person and will be dearly missed by his family, friends, coworkers, and all that came into contact with him.
He is survived by his life partner and soul mate Jane Schoonover, father Ray Bufler, Sons Ryan Bufler and his wife Shelley, Kyle Bufler and Shelby Lencioni. His grandson Blake Bufler will have an awesome and spirited Guardian Angel to watch over him. Jane's parents Bob and Janet Schoonover thought of Mike as "one of their boys" and he was loved by her entire family. Mike is also survived by the mother of his children Kathy Bufler and his Aunt Julie and Uncle Jim Arnold.
