

CMSgt. Michael E. Merritt, USAF (Ret.), born December 23, 1975, at Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base in Thailand, passed away on June 14, 2024. He was the beloved son of Panee Merritt of Rome, New York, and the late William E. Merritt. As a baby, Mike moved to the United States, where his family eventually settled in Rome, New York. He graduated from Rome Free Academy and enlisted in the Air Force in August 1998.
Throughout his distinguished career, Mike served in various capacities. Initially, he was an aircraft loadmaster on AC-130H Gunships, before cross-training into Air Traffic Control (ATC) in 2003. In his ATC role, he held numerous leadership positions, managing both tower and RAPCON facilities and deploying multiple times in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.
Mike was dedicated to his professional development, earning a Bachelor's degree in Professional Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2005 and a Master's degree in Leadership and Management from Webster University in 2015.
He is remembered for his love of food and his vibrant personality. Mike leaves behind his loving wife, Matilda Mahone of Texas; his children, Devon, Gabriel, and Jade Merritt of Florida; his stepson, Derek Jr., and granddaughter, Santana Mahone of Texas; his sisters, Laura Velez (Jose) Jr., and their children LeAsia Velez, Chaweewan Rodriguez, Gianna Velez, and Cameron Merritt; Kimberly Humphrey (Shaun) and their children Nikoletta and Caselli Humprey of New York; and Supaporn Pinngeon of Ohio.
Mike's legacy of service, leadership, and love for his family will be cherished and remembered by all who knew him.
