Mike was born on September 19, 1954, in San Antonio, Texas to the late Ernest Olivares and Anna Marie Teran. Raised in San Antonio, Mike was the oldest of seven siblings. He is lovingly remembered by his sisters, Teresa Guillen, Sam Olivares, and Linda Alvarez and his brothers, Ernest Olivares (Gina) and Mark Olivares and was preceded in death by Lisa Carranza.
Mike's life was enriched by his 52-year marriage to Vivian Rose Ochoa. Together they raised three children, Stephanie Olivares Cross (Derek), Michael Ernest Olivares II (Lisa), and Timothy Joseph Olivares, who continue to reside in San Antonio. Mike's legacy is further carried on by his five adoring grandchildren, Andrew Michael Ory, Briana Nicole Pecci, Cassandra Leigh Blankley, Maggie Louise Olivares, and Mabel Stella Olivares.
Mike's academic journey took him to St. Mary's University where he received a bachelor's in mathematics and computer science. A proud alumni, Mike donated over the years to support many projects and tuitions at St. Mary's. Not long after graduation, Mike became an integral part of the technical advances at Valero Corporation dedicating 35 years as a system's analyst, project manager, and consultant - traveling to refineries across the U.S. and Great Britain.
A man of simple pleasures, Mike found joy playing golf with his best bud, Mando Barbosa and meeting up with his friends, Troy, Bruce, John, and Larry for a cold one. A die-hard San Antonio Spurs fan, Mike was present at their inaugural game against the San Diego Conquistadors on October 10, 1973, at HemisFair Arena and was most recently a season ticket holder. Mike was also often found cheering on his favorite football teams: Dallas Cowboys, UT Longhorns, and UTSA Roadrunners. With a generous heart, Mike was passionate about Meals on Wheels, delivering hundreds of meals to home bound San Antonians throughout his life.
Mike's memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him as a kind and virtuous man. Mike's life was a testament of the enduring power of family and service, and he will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mike's memory can be made to San Antonio area Meals on Wheels and/or The American Cancer Society.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at Porter Loring Mortuary West.
