Michelle Claire Myers died in her home in San Antonio on Monday, June 17, 2013. Michelle was born Michael Clinton Myers on November 7, 1942 in Philadelphia to Clinton Lawson Myers and Virginia McBride both of whom preceded her in death. Michael graduated from Manhattan College with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1965 and spent his professional career as a chemical engineer for Exxon Research and Development becoming an expert in the flow systems of liquified natural gas and holding many patents. During this time he married and fathered two daughters, Christine Diane and Jennifer Maureen. When he and his wife divorced, Michael, having custody of his daughters, finished raising and educating them. Being a parent to his girls was a major joy and focus in his life.
During her final working years with Exxon, Michael transitioned on the job (with tremendous support from Exxon) to Michelle Claire. She legally changed her name and gender on May 12, 1997 in Houston. Michelle became active in the LGBT community in Houston, but within a year after her retirement, Michelle moved to San Antonio to live closer to her family. She became again very active socially and politically for equal rights and acceptance for the LGBT community. Recognizing that not everyone in the community is as fortunate as herself, Michelle worked at many levels with many organizations such as the Esperanza Center for Peace and Justice, San Antonio Gender Association, Stonewall Democrats, Equality Texas, ACLU, and PLAG San Antonio.
In addition to her parents, Michelle was preceded in death by her brother, Bruce Lawson Myers and her sister, Judith Myers McGhee. She is survived by her sisters, Virginia Myers Papp and Gail Myers Jones, both of San Antonio; her two daughters, Christine Myers Warden and husband John and their children, Chloe and Lelia and Jennifer Myers Trunk and husband Ed and their children, Elizabeth and Raymond; niece, Sara Jones O'Rear (Michael); nephews, Patrick Jones (Christina Patterson) and Michael Jones and his children Ethan and Alexander.
Michelle's generosity of spirit, care for the welfare of others, and loving heart will be missed by all her family and friends.
