

Myrtle Lewis was born May 5, 1939, in Huntsville, Texas, the daughter of James and Ethel Young. Myrtle grew up in Church with her family and accepted Christ as her personal Savior at a young age. Myrtle learned to play the piano by ear in her early teens. She became a music director in her early 20s at a Church Of God In Christ in Fort Worth Texas. She moved to San Antonio Texas in 1965 where she continued her ministry of music with the West End Church of God in Christ. She later joined Westridge Park First Baptist Church also of San Antonio, Texas where she served as the music director for 13 years. In July of 1981 she became the musical director of Bethany Missionary Baptist Church San Antonio, Texas where she served until her retirement on December 31, 2017.
Myrtle graduated Salutatorian from Sam Houston High in Huntsville Texas before relocation to Fort Worth Texas with her family in 1956. She attended both Jarvis Christian College, San Antonio College to which she obtained her Associates Degree. She also attended UTSA and Incarnate Word.
Myrtle was a Substitute Teacher and Literary Mentor with the Edgewood ISD. She was a licensed Child Development Director for 30 years. She retired in 2004. Myrtle returned to work in 2004 as the Director for After School Kare with the Northside ISD; her employment was for 4 years. Lastly, she worked with San Antonio Urban Ministries and left that and all employment in October 2008.
Myrtle was joined in union to W.C. Mathis for several years before he preceded her in death. Myrtle was joined in union to Joe B. Lewis for several years before he preceded her in death.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Mavon James Young of Huntsville, Texas.
She leaves to cherish her memories a son, Barry (Dawn) Mathis of San Antonio, Texas; daughter Michelle (Corey) Lewis of Camden, Delaware, daughter Vicki Mathis of San Antonio, sister Jewel Williamson of San Antonio Texas and brother Tommy (Norma) Young of Fort Worth, Texas; 7 Grandchildren: Brandy Godley, Zachary (Sarah) Wilson, Michael Mathis, Lauren Mathis, and D’Yani Mathis all of San Antonio, Texas; Kameo (Jacob) Benner of Sacile, Italy and Jae Moore of Kerrville, Texas. 7 Great Grandchildren: Samarra Morgan, Aniyah Williams, Taylr Martin, Emerson Martin, Carter Mathis, Aa’lani Miller all of San Antonio and Jianna Benner of Sacile, Italy; a God Sons Michael and Burshaud Williams of Houston, Texas, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Myrtle enjoyed playing the piano, puzzles, music, working in her yard, traveling NOT by plane, game shows, westerns, court shows and spending time with her family and friends. She loved to laugh, and we all know she would correct you when needed. She’d give you that eye, stare, look or finger wave. She maintained a great can-do attitude even unto death. She was the epitome of strength to her family. She introduced her children to Christ at a young age and lived her life out loud of demonstrating her faith and her love of God.
