Nancy Headland, a devoted wife, mother, and Nana, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2022 after a hard-fought battle with ovarian cancer. Nancy Jean Seamster was born on September 25, 1947 in San Francisco, CA to Marion and Barbara Seamster. The Seamsters lived in Phoenix and then El Paso where Nancy graduated from El Paso High School in 1965. She moved with her parents to Ft. Worth where she soon met her future husband, Phil Headland. Phil and Nancy met on a blind date in July of 1967 and fell head over heels in love. They were married on September 1, 1967. Nancy was a loving mother to three children: Wendy Elizabeth, Scott Phillip, and Holly Jean. She was larger than life, always the first person to step in and volunteer to help anywhere there was a need.
Nancy had so much energy, love, and nurturing to give. From being a Girl Scout Leader to volunteering for the PTA to working in schools, Nancy spent her life surrounded by kids and bringing them great joy. She gave so much of herself that she inspired everyone around her to give, too. Nancy was extremely social; people of all ages loved her from the moment they met her. She was always up for an adventure and she created fun wherever she went. She played Bunco with the same group of friends for over 35 years. Nancy had a lifelong love of traveling, gardening, and arts and crafts. She and Phil took many cruises, venturing as far as the Baltic Capitals and the Mediterranean Sea. She liked to say that she was “more craftsy than artsy”. Nancy’s most memorable creations were huge scrapbooks for each of the four grandkids on every one of their birthdays. They treasure their “Nana Books” to this day. Nancy worked for NISD for 25 years, retiring just in time to take care of her grandchildren when they were born. Once they started school, Nancy returned to her familiar role of “Super Volunteer”. Her favorite job was helping in the school library, making elaborate themes for every Book Fair. Nancy was such an integral part of their school that she was hired as an art teacher in 2015.
Nancy’s greatest pride and joy was her four grandchildren. She took them on so many adventures, from Sea World to the Botanical Gardens to Children’s Museums. Sometimes it was hard to know who was the adult when Nancy and the grandkids were together. She was so silly and spunky that her grandkids nicknamed her “Savage Granny”. She loved taking them to her cabin in Cloudcroft, NM any chance she had, spending many summers and holidays with them there. It was a true gift that Nancy and the grandkids celebrated her last Thanksgiving just a month ago in her happy place.
Nancy is preceded in death by her son, Scott; her father, Marion; and her mother, Barbara. She is survived by her husband, Phil, her daughters Wendy Headland Salome (Nick Salome) of Austin, TX and Holly Headland Grogan (Ryan Grogan) of San Antonio, TX, her grandchildren, Emerson Lorraine Salome, Reed Scott Grogan, Kahlil Scott Salome, and Elizabeth Ryan Grogan, her brother, Robert Seamster, and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
A Visitation and Reception will take place on Friday, December 30, 2022 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
