Nancy Carrol Scantland, a loving wife of 66 years, a mother of two, a grandmother of seven and a great grandmother of eleven, has left all of them, along with many friends, with heavy hearts, but with many wonderful memories. She passed away peacefully on October 31, 2023, at her home surrounded with family.
Nancy's life was marked by her unwavering love for her family and friends who she held so dear. She was born on July 8,1938, in Mayfield Kentucky, and grew up in Detroit, Michigan, where she met the love of her life Louis L. Scantland and married him on August 2, 1955. They have lived the last 33 years in San Antonio, Texas, with all of their immediate family living close by.
She graduated from East Commerce High School (females only) in Detroit and was trained in secretarial skills. Her five year career in that field was spent at Campbell-Ewald Co., where she worked her way up to be the assistant Personnel Director. Later, after her children left home for college, she studied to become a Faux Finish Artist and Colorist. She became well-known for that work in Dallas and has had comments from art critics, that her work in her own home was better than similar work in the Vatican. Several years later, she started abstract painting. She never sold one of her paintings, but donated dozens of them for auctions in local charities, some bringing thousands of dollars for the charities.
She cherished her family above all else. She delighted in holiday gatherings and taking her family on memorable vacations, creating cherished moments that they will always remember. She had a great love of travel and lived long enough to complete her bucket-list except two places, Nepal and Heaven. Her family now believes she only missed one.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur D. Givens and Mary Sue Harrison Givens, her brothers Ronald and Lamont Givens, her sister Doris Ann Halbert. She is survived by her husband Louis L.Scantland ; sister, Beverly J. Barclay; children, Beth Woolfolk Eadie and Lee W. Scantland, grand children Jon B. Scantland, Jake H. Scantland, Jenifer Scantland Shirley, Hunter Scott Woolfolk, David Preston Woolfolk, Spencer Lewis Woolfolk and Tia Karrol Woolfolk, and their respective spouses; and eleven great grandchildren; and many other extended family members and many close friends. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Fernando Lopez, Vitas Hospice Care, Caring Solutions and the wonderful people working for them that assisted in keeping Nancy pain free in her final weeks.
Nancy's legacy, her art and her upbeat attitude will continue to inspire us to love and to cherish our family and friends, and the great city, state, and country that we are so fortunate to live in, and to strive to join her in that wonderful place she now resides.
