She was born to loving parents, John Wesley & Esther Elizabeth Slaughter, in San Antonio, Texas, on September 5, 1925. After having to briefly dropout of high school to help support her family, she returned to get her GED and, with the encouragement of her parents, went on to attend business school. She worked as a secretary for a restaurant supply company for 30 years, becoming one of the longest employees there due to her strength and dedication. Being a person of strong faith, Nancy became a charter member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 79 years and served as Worthy Matron three times. She served these organizations proudly and with great loyalty.
When not at work, Nancy loved spending time with her family. She was always there when needed and never hesitated to help others in need. Her neighbors visited often and she cherished these times dearly. She could often be found baking treats for her neighbors or grandchildren. Other hobbies she enjoyed include reading, sewing, crocheting, and doing arts and crafts. So many of those that call her mom, grandma, friend or neighbor will cherish the times they had with her and each tissue box cover, covered photo album or crocheted blanket that she gave them.
