Her husband of 38 years, Marshal Mills, precedes her in death. Left behind to remember Nellie are two brothers, Clayton Kuhlmann of San Angelo, TX, and Dayton Kuhlmann of Fredericksburg, TX; sister-in-law Oleta Kuhlmann, of Mason, TX; son Gil (Rosanne) Mills of San Antonio, TX; two daughters, Marsha (Edward) Schroeder of Seguin, TX, and Pam (David) Kempen of San Angelo, TX; her grandchildren, Annaliese (Kris) Johnson of McKinney, TX; Brent (Viviana) Mills of St Thomas, USVI; Erika (Josh) Brown of Woodstock, GA; Kelsey Fort of Angleton, TX; Marshal Schroeder of Seguin, TX; Matthew (Tracy) Kempen of Elk Grove, CA; Jessica (Kevin) Sorensen of Bryan, TX; Jillian (Bill) Casarez of Von Ormy, TX; and 10 great-grandchildren. Nellie will also be affectionately remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Each has their own special memories of her, but all recall she had a great sense of humor and laughed easily, loved deeply, took pride in the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren, was always eager to help others, never met a stranger, and made all those around her feel important with her gift of giving her undivided attention.
No distance was too far for Nellie to travel to spend time with her family, especially her grand and great-grandchildren. Her trips to Turkey, Germany, Illinois, Georgia and the Virgin Islands mean more to her family than she may have ever known. She enjoyed playing Bunco, sewing, crocheting, flower arranging and baking, her renowned carrot cake being a family favorite.
Volunteering to serve her country during WWII, Nellie began her career as a GS-3, and quickly rose through the ranks retiring as a GS-12 in a male-dominated field. She served 41 years as a Logistics Management Systems Analyst at Kelly AFB, and received the Outstanding Civilian Career Service Award for her significant accomplishments, leadership and notable impact upon the Air Force's mission throughout her career.
After her retirement, she shifted her energies to her volunteer work where she devoted over 15,000 hours to the St. Luke's Volunteer Auxiliary, as well as TAHA/TAHV. She was an active member of both St. John's Lutheran Church and Shepherd King Lutheran Church, where she shared her time and talents of serving others.
Visitation will be held from 6:00pm until 8:00pm on Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at Porter Loring North. Funeral services will follow at 10:00am, Thursday, June 1, 2017 at Shepherd King Lutheran Church. Interment will be at 2:00pm at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CAM, American Diabetes Association or Alzheimer's Association.
