

He was born on May 2, 1926 to Simona Villarreal and Nicanor Villarreal, Sr. in San Antonio, Texas. Nicanor was the sixth of seven children. He enlisted in the army at the age of 17.
Nicanor was a Veteran of WWII, Korean and the Vietnam wars. He married high school sweetheart, Mary Alice. Together they traveled with the military and raised their eight children. He retired from the Air Force in 1969. Nicanor then worked Civil Service for 22 years, finally retiring in 1990. He enjoyed retirement, cherished the extra time with his wife, was involved with his church, and cared for his grandchildren.
Nicanor was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; one brother and two grandsons.
He is survived by wife, Mary Alice; his eight children, Dr. Sylvia F. Villarreal, Alice Villarreal, Lawrence Villarreal and wife, Patricia, Nova Olivarez and husband, Arnold, Theresa Tijerina and husband, Jose, Nic-John Villarreal, Catherine Garcia and husband, Paul and Steven Villarreal and wife, Angie; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his brothers, Paul and Jose; sister, Hortence; fond brothers and sister-in-laws, adoring nieces and nephews, fellow parishioners of St. Brigid's Catholic Church, his proud Knights of Columbus brothers and many great friends.
Nicanor was a dedicated husband for 62 and a half years, an outstanding father, grandfather, great-grandfather, a family man, a trusted friend, a caring brother, a special uncle, a faithful Catholic, a pillar of the community, a Knight of Columbus, a True American, a Proud Soldier, a Decorated Military Veteran, a College Graduate, intelligent, loyal, hard working and a loving human being. Nicanor lived a beautiful life. In his final days he asked that he be remembered for all the good times that were shared and the warmth of his love.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the special individuals that cared for Nicanor at his final stage of life, Dr. David Espino, UT Medicine San Antonio, Claudia Orona, Helen Alegria and Nicolae Petra with Professional Caretakers, Inc., the loving care of VistaCare Hospice and his many lifelong friends who enriched Nicanor's life and visited and blessed him with their prayers.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 17, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Porter Loring.
