O. Roger Hollan, M.D., beloved doctor, father and husband, passed away on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 of complications related to heart disease. He was born October 11, 1922, in Sinton, Texas; graduated from Sinton High School in 1939; obtained his bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1942; and received his Doctor of Medicine from Yale University School of Medicine in 1945, at the age of 23. There, he met his future wife, Edith Lingle of Lancaster, Pa., who was pursuing a Masters in Nursing. After three years of military service in the U. S. Army during World War II, Dr. Hollan became a Resident in Internal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, in Philadelphia, Pa. He returned to Texas in 1950 and began a private practice in internal medicine and gastroenterology in San Antonio which he continued until the year of his retirement in 1994. Dr. Hollan was a founder of San Antonio Medical Associates, P.A. along with Drs. Julian Barton and Rowan Fisher. Later, he became medical partners and friends with Drs. Robert Stevens, Karl Hempel, Ralph Wells, and Charles Briseno. Dr. Hollan was President of the Bexar County Medical Society, 1962, and the Texas Academy of Internal Medicine, 1975. One prominent physician called him the "conscience of the Bexar County Medical Society". In 1991, Dr. Hollan became a Texas Laureate Award Winner of the American College of Physicians. In 1997, the O. Roger Hollan, M.D. Professorship in Internal Medicine was founded in his honor by family, friends, and former patients at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Roger "Bob" Hollan was well known and loved for his integrity, humility, work ethic, compassion, and devoted personal attention to his patients and their families. In this, he was a doctor of the old school. He loved UT Longhorn football and Yale and Perm medical schools. Words cannot express his family's pride in his example. Dr. Hollan is survived by his wife of 64 years, Edith, and by his five children, Honorable Chief Judge Edith H. Jones, and her husband, Sherwood; John R. Hollan; Professor Douglas W. Hollan; Robert B. Hollan, and his wife, Lynn; and Rosemary L. Hollan, J.D.; also by his grandchildren and great granddaughter, Andrew, Miranda, and Edie Jones. May he rest in peace. The family gratefully thanks his many friends, colleagues, and, most importantly, his patients who gave special meaning and purpose to Dr. Hollan's full life. A special thanks is given to Dr. Hollan's personal physicians, Drs. Karl Hempel and Charles Briseno, and to all the caring nurses, care givers, and staff of the Nix Hospital.
