There are no words to express my feelings in your passing. It was shocking knowing  you left us so sudden. We didn't have much time to spend with you, but you were always there for us in our time of need.  You were always so happy to help and confident in your advise, always knew what the best course of action were for us. Friends like you don't come around very often, and we will always miss young keep you our hearts and prayers.

Oscar and I were part of the tight-knit speech and debate team at Churchill (Class of ’81).  The team spent endless hours over the years on school buses crisscrossing the State and on planes traveling around the country under the guidance of our wonderful teachers Lanny and BJ Naegelin – so needless to say I’ve got lots of great Oscar Cantu stories.  One of my favorite stories took place at the 1981 National Speech Tournament in Huntsville, Alabama, where Oscar won the National Championship in Lincoln-Douglas Debate.  The way that event worked was that one speaker would give a brief argument on an issue, the other would then come to the podium to cross-examine the first, sit down for a few minutes to organize his/her thoughts and then stand up and present the opposing view.  So in the final round in front of hundreds of people, Oscar cross-examined his opponent and when everyone expected him to sit down to prepare his argument he instead remained at the podium as if to say, “Yeah it’s the national finals and yeah the Championship is on the line but I don’t need any prep time.  I got this.”  It blew everyone away.  Although that was over 40 years ago now, I still remember the audience’s stunned surprise.  Oscar was so confident and, of course, out flowed a solid argument in his silky, baritone voice.  At that moment the round was over, the other poor kid had no chance.  After we all “grew up” and had paying jobs I would bump into Oscar from time-to-time at the Courthouse.  He always had something funny to say.  I don’t think I ever left an encounter with Oscar without a smile on my face.  I knew in high school that Oscar had a very loving and supportive family.  The last time I saw him was about a year ago at HEB with his kids – his “brood.”  He clearly was proud of his children and made a point to tell them.  So Oscar had about the greatest gift that one can ask for, a wonderful family.  David Lopez

I cannot how or when I met Oscar.  I just know that once Oscar was a friend he was always a friend.  There is such much I will miss about Oscar...his legal talent, his jokes, and his mischievousness just to name a few.  He will be missed but never forgotten.  Judge Stephanie Boyd

My cousin Oscar was loved by all.He was a generous person who cared for all. His love for his family came through in the proud stories he told of them all. He was always uplifting and told pretty funny jokes. I just love you sweets.
