We gather here, not in sorrow but in celebration, for the Lord has called home a faithful servant, S.K. Oscar B. Resendez, whose journey on earth began on a crisp winter day; December 18, the year of our Lord, 1956, in Seguin, TX, and culminated in the loving embrace of our Creator on October 11, the year of our Lord, 2024, in San Antonio, TX. Oscar, a man of profound faith and boundless love, has left behind a legacy as enduring as the structures he helped design and as uplifting as the spirits he so effortlessly raised.
Born to the late Felipe J. Resendez and Amada Barrera Resendez, Oscar grew up amidst a full household, alongside his cherished siblings: Elodia (Juan Medina), Eva Angelina, Felipe, Jr. (Elizabeth), Elena, and Tina. Oscar was an especially proud father to his favorite (and only) daughter, Jennifer, son, Jason; and grandchildren, Kaylyn and Camren.
His life was rich with the influence of his mentor and friend, Fr. John Dowling, MSF, and the guiding light of his godparents, Mr. and Mrs. Santos and Inez Molina. Oscar's heart forever held a place for his predeceased loved ones: his parents; grandparents; his crafty and hardworking sister, Eva; the family hero, Felipe, Jr., a valiant United States Marine (Vietnam); his nieces, Norma Jean, Dora, and Lena, along with his son-in-law, Cleveland; numerous loving aunts, uncles and cousins; S.H.S. friends, Ricky Sassenhagen and Alexa Norman. And, his loyal four-legged companion, Cocoa, who was a source of joy and steadfast companionship through the years.
Oscar's educational journey was as diverse as it was impressive, beginning with his early years in Jersey Village ISD, transitioning to middle school at Seguin ISD, Ball Jr. High, and culminating in his graduation from Seguin High School in May 1976. His pursuit of knowledge led him to San Antonio College where he studied Computer-Aided Drafting and Design; and then to Wayland Baptist University, where he earned an Associate of Applied Sciences and a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Education, specializing in Drafting and Design, in May 2010. His religious studies began at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Seguin, TX under Fr. John Dowling, MSF. Oscar served as a Eucharistic Minister and Catechism Instructor at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and then at Saint Monica's, Converse, TX. His studies continued for an additional 5 years at Saint Monica's. He then served with the Missionaries of the Holy Family, Cas Hills, S.A., TX. His dedication to his faith was further exemplified by his time as a Seminarian-Novice at Los Missioneros de la Sagrada Familia (2176), Santiago, Chile.
Professionally, Oscar was a master of his craft, a meticulous CAD Project Draftsman and Detailer who played a significant role in shaping the San Antonio skyline, from parking garages to an international bridge design. His work was not just a job but a testament to his meticulous nature and his desire to contribute to the world's beauty and functionality.
Service was Oscar's calling, and he answered it with vigor and passion. As a member and Past Grand Knight (3rd and 4th degrees) of the Knights of Columbus, Council 9681, he lived out the principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. Whether serving as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, Catechism Instructor, or founding Eucharistic Adoration at Saint Monica's, or coaching youth Girls’ National Softball and Boys' Little League teams, Oscar's life was a living sermon of love and dedication to others.
His interests were as eclectic as his talents, ranging from religious studies to cheering on his children and grandchildren at their athletic events, to engaging in long, (often late night) heartfelt conversations with his sisters, Elodia, Elena and Tina; sister-in-law, Liz; nieces (Cynthia and Margie); cousins (the Barreras, Lermas, Molinas, Ochoas, Parmas and Resendez's); and friends, including international friends he remained in close contact with. Oscar also enjoyed chats with longtime neighbor and friend, Manuel, who often looked in on, and helped Oscar. An avid chess player, artist, guitariast; and martial artist (brown belt pursuing his black belt), Oscar's enthusiasm for life was contagious. In his youth he found solace in nature through hunting and fishing. He especially relished in the simple pleasures of classic TV Westerns, and Elvis Presley's classics. In H.S. Oscar was an integral part of the Seguin Matador Jr. Varsity and Varsity football teams and track and field (hurdles).
Oscar was a man best described as faith-filled, wise, and intelligent. His life echoed the words of the Apostle Paul, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." (2 Timothy 4:7). Indeed, Oscar fought the good fight with grace and humility, ran his race with perseverance, and kept his faith as a beacon for all.
Today, as we bid farewell to S.K. Oscar B. Resendez, let us hold fast to the memories, the lessons, and the love he bestowed upon us. His spirit, a brilliant tapestry woven with threads of devotion and kindness, remains an indelible part of our lives. Oscar's journey continues beyond the veil, in the eternal embrace of our Heavenly Father, where he surely hears the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant."
